NFL Update: Jameis Winston Has an Emmanuel Ogbah Problem

Pokes in the NFL are headlined by a couple of defensive trenchmen.

It was a light week for Pokes in the NFL. Just like their alma mater, several former Cowboys enjoyed a bye week. But one OSU alum made enough plays for everyone on Sunday.

Emmanuel Ogbah Came to Play in Tampa Bay

His Browns ultimately fell 26-23 in what was their fourth overtime game in seven but not before Ogbah had a monster game.

Every time the two have met on the football field, they’ve also met in the backfield. Emmanuel Ogbah and Jameis Winston first crossed paths in Jerry World when the sophomore QB, fresh off of a national championship, caught a glimpse of the sophomore DE — out of the corner of his eye.

Ogbah would sack Winston twice in 2014 and then he got to him twice more on Sunday. (What would have been his third was nullified due to penalty.) Ogbah even sacked Winston when the Browns and Bucs met in a preseason game back in 2017.

Ogbah, who missed two games early this year with an ankle injury, had a season-high five total tackles, 1.5 sacks, a tackle for loss and two huge passes defended as the Browns’ narrowly missed out against the Buccaneers.

The former Oklahoma State defensive end batted down two of Winston’s passes including this timely one, even if it didn’t pay off.

Now in his fourth week back from injury, Ogbah appears to have hit his stride. Hopefully, at least for his sake, his Browns will join him.

Vincent Taylor Still Earning His Way

Vincent Taylor has been endearing himself to coaches and earning household-name status among Dolphins fans since the former Cowboy defensive tackle fell into Miami’s lap during the 2017 NFL Draft. But Taylor has yet to start a game now halfway through his second NFL season.

This from Barry Jackson, who covers the ‘Phins for the Miami Herald, sheds some light on that dynamic and Taylor’s attitude.

Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek’s trust in Akeem Spence, going back to their Detroit years, clearly is going a long way, because Vincent Taylor hasn’t received any first team snaps (according to Taylor) even though he has made the most impact plays of all of the defensive tackles. Taylor said he is OK with that.

“Everyone wants to start, but coach Kris will rotate us like crazy,” Taylor said. “We’re all going to play about the same. I’m just happy to be here.” [Miami Herald]

Taylor will continue to get opportunities and, if he’s shown us anything during his college and pro career, is sure to make the best of them.

One-Liners

• Chris Carson may have been on a bye week but he was recognized by this teammate for his leaping acumen.

• Caron’s former and current teammate Tre Flowers has made a pretty amazing transition from college safety to starting NFL cornerback.

• Blake Jarwin caught his lone target and paid it off for 16 yards during the Cowboys’ 20-17 loss to the rival Redskins.

• America’s team did have a chance to tie with just over a minute left, but…

Meanwhile, Bailey with 3-for-4 for Minnesota during the Vikings’ 37-17 rout of the Jets.

• Russell Okung and his Chargers earned the 20-19 win over the Titans on Thursday night. And then the Pro Bowler and two-time All-American at OSU found time for extracurricular activities with the COO of his nonprofit organization Greater Foundation. My money’s on the big guy.

• Tyler Patmon registered one tackle during a 20-7 loss to Houston, the Jaguars’ third-straight.
