Notebook: Oklahoma State-Kansas State

We did a postgame show. We did the 10 Thoughts. We did a recap. We looked at why Ramon Richards was on top of the lockers in underneath Kansas State’s stadium. As a final Saturday wrap, let’s go go the notebook.

• Why was Ben Grogan kicking off to start the game? Did Philly pull a hair follicle and have to sit the first quarter?

• Kansas State’s first two drives were the most Kansas State drives of all time. There were 17 plays, four passes, 13 points scored and an extra point doinked off the upright. If you Googled “kansas state football” that’s a great summation of what would pop up.

• Chris Carson really doesn’t get enough credit for his receiving skills. He’s become a terrific option out of the backfield.

• Sugar Loaf Daniels can motor! Holy balls!

• The announcer (color man) Mike Bellotti seems fun at parties.

• Does it ever feel like KSU games have the weirdest scores ever? I feel like they always score or have scored upon them numbers like 26, 43, 19, 32 and 39. This game was no different.

• I think I’m going to write a column about this, but Gundy’s decision at the end of the first half was mildly perplexing although the 15-yard penalty on Zach Crabtree didn’t help. After the half, ABC reported that Gundy said he didn’t go for it at end of half because more bad could happen than good. Here’s my column crux: I think Gundy sort of fancies himself as Kansas State.

• This poor man.

Don’t turn it over, be sound in special teams and rely on the run if you can. An “eff you” coordinator has turned into a legitimately conservative, wise head coach. This is a good thing most of the time although once a year around Thanksgiving or the week after against that other team in the state of Oklahoma it starts to drive me nutty.

• Kansas State was 5/13 on third downs. I guarantee you Glenn Spencer’s group won’t get enough credit for that.

• What do you think the longest fourth down Bill Snyder has ever attempted was in a non-end-of-game situation? A yard? Five feet?

• At least Kansas State’s QB didn’t get hurt and Snyder work some of his Harry Potter voodoo with a 29th string walk-on WR who is only on the team to raise its APR?

• I was a big fan of Kansas State’s helmets.

• Remember that fake FG Snyder ran in the third quarter? That told me he didn’t think KSU could stop Oklahoma State’s offense (and it couldn’t).

• Related: Oklahoma State racked up 637 yards which is the most against KSU since it gave up 658 to Texas Tech last November.

• On a scale of Adarius Bowman playing basketball to 10, how bad was the Rudolph pick-six?

• Justice Hill is really patient. He has a lot of great qualities. I think that might be one of the more underrated ones. Watch him here. He only gains three yards, but he looks like a veteran with his patience and cutting.

• Oklahoma State didn’t punt in the first half. Not really helping Zach Sinor’s Heisman campaign, are we? You know, Jim Harbaugh is out here letting his dudes play 24 positions and we can’t even let Sinor have an 85-yard field to blast one. Sad!

• I’m not sure I knew you could advance a blocked punt. Kinda embarrassing that I run a college football blog.

• They recovered!

• As bad as the third quarter was, Oklahoma State was still within two entering the fourth quarter. That is sort of remarkable in retrospect considering the penalties, turnovers and special teams play in that 15-minute span.

• Related: That end-of the-third-quarter drive and TD from Rudolph to Hays was big boy, Big 12 title-saving stuff.

• This is weird.

• At one point I wrote, “You gotta have a turnover on defense to win.” Little did I know it would come with 0:00 on the clock.

• There was a lot of talk about whether Carson should have taken a knee at the one-yard-line with 1:45 left. I think my general rule there is to not get too cute although I understand where people are coming from. Kansas State had two timeouts at the time so you could have presumable run 1:15 off the clock and left them with 30 seconds to drive most of the field to kick a FG for the win. With the way they were performing in the kick return game, probably not something you want to mess with.

• This dude!

• Speaking of — Kansas State averaged 28.4 return yards on kickoffs. OSU is allowing 17.11 on average.

• Blake Jarwin’s previous career high in yards was 50. He had 96 on Saturday.

• Ugh.

• We got Brad Underwood, too, Kansas State!

• One of the biggest plays of the game for me was a third and three KSU had at its own 35 with six minutes left. They were still up two at the time, and Oklahoma State somehow stopped them, got it back and promptly went 80 yards for the win.

• Jesse Ertz ran it 30 times! Their QB!

• This was terrific.
