Notes on Mike Gundy’s Pre-Kansas Press Conference

Mike Gundy talked to the media on Monday following OSU’s loss to Kansas State on Saturday and discussed Thanksgiving, the Kansas game and why he’s still proud of Oklahoma State’s seniors.

• Time is limited because he’s working on Thanksgiving dinner.

• Seniors are “special from top to bottom.” Their contribution to society is a big deal. There are 400 homeless people in Stillwater. Team pitches in to feed them. Took place on Sunday. Gundy forgot about going to help hand food out but that Rudolph, Stoner and other players were there. Cited Rudolph not playing well on Saturday but showing up on Sunday. “That makes me most proud.”

• Reiterated that OSU had the best team and should have won. He was disappointed after the loss but when you go back to the culture and it made him feel better. Hangs his hat on the culture and not on the wins and losses.

• “Sundays are not very fun here when you lose. There are some long faces.” Not passing out lollipops. Said preparation for next week is just as hard if not harder when you win.

• Staff doesn’t like him on Sundays because he has to tell them what’s not good.

• Noted losing the turnover battle, special teams and giving up four big plays as the difference on Saturday. Said KSU did what OSU usually does. It all came down to the kick return.

• Will know more about Darrion Daniels on Tuesday or Wednesday. Was in a sling on Saturday.

• Always worries about missed opportunities with this particular team (re: CFP and Big 12 Championship). “I worry about that all the time.”

• He was calling plays in 2008 Texas game and screwed it up. Said he tried to get fancy instead of just throwing to Dez “because Dez was better than everybody.”

• Said seven of the last 10 years, OSU could have played anybody in the country on any given day. Went through every year. Forgot what OSU did in 2011 (which was hilarious).

• Feels good about coming back and being good again in the near future. “Yes, this was a special group. Does that part eat on me? Yes, it does. But life is full of events that make us feel not so good about things, that’s why we believe in systems that say, ‘let’s keep rolling.'”

• Didn’t know anything about James Washington out of HS other than when you go to a HS game in his hometown, half the people there are his family. Saw him hit the top of the backboard with his hand in HS.

• “(Washington) is going to win the Biletnikoff. That gives us three in eight.”

• “(Mason) will leave here as the most decorated player since Barry Sanders.”

• Watched KU-OU and thought “if six isn’t playing, how many points would they have?” Said they do some really good and interesting things.

• Called Robert Allen a homer again and said he was surprised he put Gundy on the spot asking about OU-KU kerfuffle.

• Doubled up on his sleeping pills on Saturday night.

• Didn’t know about the Baker madness until Sunday. “That’s not even something I would get into.”

• A.J. Green and Rodarius Williams are starting to wear down. Discipline issues led to OSU not being as deep as it maybe should be on defense. More important to have 122 “class guys” than winning and losing. “Four and eight are tired. Thirty-one is tired. Flip side is that everyone is tired.”

• On assistants: “We have quality people here. Do I feel like at times we’ve been out-coached? Sure. Have we out-coached people? Sure.” Said coaches will be fine. Have a responsibility to fix what’s wrong. “It’s never going to be perfect.”

• Offensive turnovers a result of being in shootouts. Called them “throw-a-thons.” Should be sitting at 15 but they have 21.
