Notes on Mike Gundy’s Pre-Texas Press Conference

Gundy reaffirmed his QB pecking order, talked unis and more ahead of HC against Texas.

Mike Gundy talked about OSU’s Homecoming game against Texas, the new throwback uniforms and that tweet from Spencer Sanders’ mom on Monday in his weekly presser.

• Tried to identify where they need to improve in all three phases during the bye week.

• Said bye week is an “unrealistic” time to take a look at new guys to throw out there. They know who’s good and who should play already.

• Came out of the Kansas State game fairly healthy. “Not worth talking about” any injury recoveries outside of the normal rest of a bye week.

• Texas isn’t much different defensively from most non-Kansas State defenses in the Big 12 in trying to stop Oklahoma State. Innovative, try to throw stuff out that OSU’s offense hasn’t seen. Said Saturday night’s defense would be similar to KU and Iowa State.

• OSU badly needs to reduce its missed assignments. Said scheme-wise they’ve been “pretty good” on special teams. Offensively haven’t put their protection (run and pass) together for a game. Similarly on defense haven’t been able to put deep ball defense and stopping the run together for a single game.”

• On Caden Sterns: “I think he’s a good player. He’s very talented.”

• Said recruiting services say that Texas has really good players.

• Regarding QB protection: OSU needs to not get away from who it is. Just need to protect better and hang on to the ball. Was good in QB protection against Kansas State.

• “Sinor knows he can punt better and he’ll need to punt better.” Didn’t think Matt Hockett has done enough to prove that he’ll be that much better than Sinor if they roll him out there.

• “I think Texas will be enough” of a motivator. Game time and unis not as big of a deal.

• On the uniforms: “I thought it was pretty cool. I don’t think they showed enough of me in that video, but other than that it was pretty good.”

• In the process of changing the way they display success in Stillwater (i.e. honoring past players and alums). Working in that direction and Homecoming is a nice step.

• Wants to minimize big plays defensively. Was a concern last year as well.

• “Boise is the last time we were good against the run.”

• Said Tech and ISU receivers’ size didn’t have much to do with success. Said they were just wide open. “Guys would have been able to run full speed under a coffee table” and caught those balls. ?

• “Obviously we don’t have the same firepower on offense as we did last year.” Wants to see the game played like last year’s game but expects more points scored this time around.

• Says if they would have thrown the ball better against KSU, we would feel different about how much Justice has touched the ball.

• Dru Brown is is the backup quarterback. “He’s come a pretty good way. He has a pretty good feel for what we’re doing.”

• “[Brown’s] attitude is good. He practices hard. Up to this point he’s been a loyal guy. He’s worked hard.”

• Both backup QBs will “follow the rule” in that they’ll redshirt if they don’t play more than four games. Said he’s sure they’ll take their free year.

• Corn’s mental aspect will get better in each game. Most QBs will tell you they think differently in Game 15 than in Game 1. That’s where it turned for Gundy as a student athlete. “He’s a confident player. I think [Corn] will be fine. If we didn’t we wouldn’t put him in there and start him.”

• Haven’t been many things that crossed Gundy’s desk in terms of internal frustration. Said he’s often the last to know about it. Said there are probably people in the building who say, “Why are they running that defense? That hasn’t worked in two years?!” That’s human nature.

• Effort has not been an issue. “We just need to coach them better.” Players tell you how well you’re coaching by the way they play on Saturdays.

• On Spencer Sanders’ mom’s tweet: “I haven’t had a parent call me about a playing time situation in … I can’t remember. Social media is an outlet for people to communicate. As we know … it can be very dangerous. I was made aware of that. Every mama loves their boy. They want them to play more or get more carries or catches. The only difference in anything that’s happening in society today is that now you have a way to make it public. Those things have gone on forever.”

• Would rather deal with the players directly rather than parents.

• Said he’s taken the call of every parent who’s ever called him. Gets called on other things but not playing time.

• Has a lot of respect for HS coaches because they have to deal with those people a lot more than at the college level.

• Meets with QB1 on Wednesdays. Doesn’t meet with other QBs.

• Said it’s going to be really hard to keep everyone happy re: playing time and redshirt rules. Called the NCAA system “very liberal.”

• Nothing like playing HS football with your buddies re: Stillwater HS. “Those are good times.”

• Said Bill Haisten is fickle: “We lose a couple games and he won’t show up.” Was joking (I think).
