Notes on Mike Gundy’s Texas Tech Press Conference

Mike Gundy wasn’t his jovial self on Saturday after OSU took the L.

Mike Gundy spoke with the media after his seventh loss in Big 12 openers on Saturday. He pinned a lot of the blame on an inability to rush the football and gave no indication that OSU is thinking about anything besides playing Taylor Cornelius at QB. Let’s get to it.

• “We got outcoached, outplayed and they were a lot tougher than us.” Said Tech had great plans, “much better than ours,” and executed them well.

• Practiced really well throughout the week, but “our plans weren’t any good, we didn’t play any good and they were tougher than us. That’s a bad combination in college football.”

• Have to look in the mirror and make corrections. Didn’t play with much composure. When things happened … “we got frazzled” and didn’t settle in. Credited Tech on that front.

• “No smoothie tonight, just water when you get your ass kicked.”

• Bundage was banged up, Gundy didn’t think he played very fast. Me either!

• TC “missed a couple” but noted that OSU didn’t protect him very well. Said his “biological clock was moving real fast.” Worked against him (obviously). Said “we didn’t block very good” several times and that OSU can’t rush the football when they want to rush the football.

• OSU has to get back to the basics and execute a running game. Said backs rushed well but didn’t get many opportunities.

• Some of the stuff OSU does isn’t as productive when coming from behind. I would … concur.

• “Corn’s fine. We didn’t rush the football. If you run the football it would make things a lot better.” Gundy seemed confused that somebody would ask about Dru Brown getting QB1 reps.

• Got an “if you get out of your world …” which was delightful.

• Didn’t see TC locking in on one receiver as a problem for Oklahoma State on Saturday.

• “In the second half, we certainly never got in a flow.” OSU had 90 yards and 0 points in the second half.

• OSU’s OL isn’t “anywhere near being better than we were last year.” Coming along slower. Said they practiced good this week and “this was a shock to me.”

• “We couldn’t establish anything offensively.”

• When you’re a good team, things like special teams, turnovers and missed assignments make the difference. Noted that OSU needs to stay in their box or they’ll just be average.

• Stoner had a “slight pull” and didn’t play the second half.

• “It’s not (Taylor). We need to block better. Don’t put it on him.” Wishes OSU could fix it in seven days.

• “I thought we practiced well, but it certainly didn’t look like it. It didn’t look like we practiced at all.”

• Have to practice well and “hopefully we come up with better plans.” Said that starts with him. “I’m the head coach, it starts with me.”

• Game plans are a huge part of college football each week.

• OSU is hampered by an inability to throw the deep ball “some.” You have to make it up in your ability to rush the football. He mentioned an inability to rush the ball about 84 times in 11 minutes.

• Bernard and 31 (Kolby Peel) are both doing good. Wants to fast-forward their experience, but he’s pleased with their effort.
