Oklahoma State Apparently Knows Where to Shop For Football Helmets
Paul Lukas of Uni Watch recently surveyed seven different equipment managers around the country to get some thoughts and details on helmet usage in college football. Oklahoma State’s own Wes Edwards was part of the group and gave some thoughts and facts on how OSU chooses its helmets.
What was most interesting to me was the price point. Here are the
Arizona: $50K
North Carolina: $35K
Virginia Tech: $30K
Texas Tech: $85K
West Virgina: $50K
Indiana: $40K
Oklahoma State: $15K
Did everyone read the question wrong or Oklahoma State just buying its helmets at Costco while everyone else is shopping at Whole Foods? Seriously though, Tech, $85,000 for this abomination of a helmet? What are you doing?
All the equipment guys talked about the difficulties within their jobs.
“The real challenge is trying to keep up with everybody else in terms of new helmet ideas!” said Edwards. “And it’s more work in terms of making sure all the pads and face masks are the same throughout all our different helmets — that’s been more time-consuming than we anticipated.”
I’m sure it has. Also, the WVU guy said they sold some old Pro Combat helmets of theirs in a “yard sale” and they went in 10 minutes. I’m actually surprised it took that long.
