On Saturday October 5  Carver Hawkeye Arena will play host to FloWrestling’s annual “Who’s Number 1?” event which pits the top-ranked high school wrestlers at each weight against each other to determine who deserves the #1 ranking at their weight classNo.

Two 2020 OSU commits will be competing here as future Cowboy and second-ranked Jakason Burks will take on No. 1-ranked Jesse Ybarra at 120 and second-ranked Trevor Mastrogiovanni will lace them up against No. 1 Robbie Howard at 126.

Burks vs. Ybarra (120)

In a battle of wrestlers committed to the two most historic programs in college wrestling, Burks will be taking on Iowa commit Jesse Ybarra. Burks is the No. 20 prospect in the 2020 class and finished runner up at Fargo this summer. Ybarra is the No. 16 prospect, and won Fargo this year along with their last matchup, 4-1.

Burks is currently ranked No. 2 and Ybarra No. 1.

Mastrogiovanni vs. Howard (126)

I and some others are of the belief that this incoming recruiting class for OSU could be the group that unseats Penn State from their recent reign over college wrestling. This matchup between Trevor Mastrogiovanni and Robbie Howard could play a role in that in the future as Howard is committed to PSU and Mastrogiovanni to OSU.

This match will actually be freestyle which favors Howard as traditionally he’s been a bit better in free than folk and beat Mastrogiovanni in their most recent match.

Dustin Plott

Another member of the 2020 OSU recruiting class, Dustin Plott, was originally scheduled to compete here, but was a late scratch for undisclosed reasons.

Others to watch

Trevor’s younger brother Travis is also wrestling here for the No. 1 spot at 152. Travis has not announced his college plans yet, but it’s reasonable to assume the Cowboys will have a shot.

Victor Voinovich will be competing for the No. 1 spot at 145. He’s definitely one to be aware of. Many see OSU as Voinovich’s potential college destination. He’ll be taking on Jesse Vasquez. Calgrappler has OSU listed as a possible landing spot for Vasquez.
