Sometimes getting in on the ground floor can pay dividends. It’s a recruiting tactic that Mike Gundy and Co. have been successful with in the past, and it’s one first-year quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay is employing with three-star Texas QB Garret Rangel.

On Thursday night Rangel announced an OSU offer, his first from a Power 5 school, via his Twitter account. He also holds offers from Nevada and Missouri State.

So what does OSU see that most other schools haven’t? There’s a lot to like — 247Sports currently has Rangel ranked as a three-star prospect, the No. 11 pro-style QB in the 2022 class and the 37th overall player out of Texas.

The Lone Star (Frisco, Texas) product measures in at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds and counting, and a look at his tape (see below) reveals a pocket passer with nimble feet and some deep-ball acumen.

But more impressive than a highlight reel or his measurables is the fact that he took over Lone Star’s offense as an underclassman and thrived. Rangel aired it out in his first season to the tune of 4,538 yards and 50 touchdowns with just seven interceptions while completing over 69 percent of his passes. He was named the Texas District 5-5A D-I Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore for leading Lone Star to a 14-1 record and an appearance in the state semifinals.

That impressive sophomore campaign earned Rangel invites to the Elite 11 Regionals and the Under Armour All-American Camp. If he continues his meteoric rise there will be more events and more P5 offers to follow.

There’s a lot left to be seen in Rangel’s high school career and his recruitment. But based on his start, it’s easy to see why the Cowboys are excited about this Texas passer.
