The Cowboys haven’t hit on a 2021 tight end yet, so they’ve gone a little out of the box for their most recent offer.

This past weekend, Oklahoma State extended an offer to River Helms (elite name) out of Lester, Alabama. He becomes the second Alabaman OSU has offered in the cycle, joining highly touted defensive end Dylan Brooks (who is committed to Tennessee).

Here is a quick breakdown of Helms as a prospect.

Others Involved

OSU jumps in as probably Helms’ most enticing offer in terms of program prestige. His OSU offer is his fourth among Power Five programs, joining Missouri, Pitt and Georgia Tech.

He also holds offers from UCF, Tulane, South Alabama, Memphis, Louisiana, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, FIU and Charlotte.

In the Rankings

Despite the growing offer list, Helms actually isn’t yet ranked on 247Sports. Rivals lists him as a three-star prospect and the No. 24 player from Alabama in the 2021 cycle.

A lot of this probably comes from where Helms plays his high school ball. West Limestone is a 4A (out of 7A) program in northern Alabama.

Given his offer list is growing and he is getting more notoriety, expect Helms to shoot up some boards before he signs.

Archetype

Helms will play tight end at the next level, but West Limestone High School uses him out wide as a matchup nightmare.

He is a pass-catcher who happens to be 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. Being the best player on a small-school team, Helms gets him the ball any way he can — jumpballs, quick screens, even taking handoffs on occasions. He shows a willingness to block, but it’s hard to draw too many conclusions from him clobbering 120-pound corners.

Regardless, he has solid hands for the position and is good with the ball in space because his time as a receiver, which is something you don’t often say for a tight end.

OSU at the Position

Helms is the 11th tight end OSU has offered in the cycle, though three of those 11 have already committed to other programs.

The Cowboys will need to reload their cowboy back depth chart shortly, with Logan Carter and Dayton Metcalf set to graduate after the 2020 season and Jelani Woods graduating the year after.

Apart from those three, OSU has Quinton Stewart, Valek Cisneros and Braden Cassity listed as cowboy backs on the roster, though Cassity has also spent time as a defensive end.

With those three being unknowns at this point, this could be a crucial cycle for OSU at the position to be able to develop a guy after Woods leaves.
