One of the first preseason wrestling polls came out on Thursday and the Cowboys are ranked third.

Here are the top 5 according to WIN magazine.

  1. Penn State
  2. Ohio State
  3. Oklahoma State
  4. Iowa
  5. Michigan

With three defending champions and four returning champions, Penn State takes the top nod.

The Cowboys are ranked individually at every single weight except for 133.

Weight Wrestler Rank
125 Nick Piccinnini 3
141 Kaid Brock 4
149 Boo Lewallen 4
157 Andrew Shomers 16
165 Chandler Rogers 8
174 Jacobe Smith 7
184 Dakota Geer 12
197 Preston Weigel 7
285 Derek White 4

A few things to note here.

1. This projection is assuming Nick Piccininni is at 125 for the Cowboys and Daton Fix at 133. They simply don’t rank freshman, so Daton isn’t included. If that is the case, which is still an unknown, Daton will definitely be ranked. He’ll have a legitimate shot to win it at either 125 or 133. So essentially the Cowboys look like they’ll be ranked at every weight.

2. From 165 up, the lineup’s definitely not set in stone. It could be a number of combinations, the Cowboys are really deep in the upper weights. What they’re theorizing here is Joe Smith, who is coming off a redshirt year, won’t make the lineup. And transfer Dakota Geer will simply step in and take over at 184. They’re expecting the rest of the lineup to basically stay the same. I don’t know exactly what the lineup will be, but I do know it could be so many different things that there’s definitely a possibility that they don’t trot out this one.

Any way you slice it, this is a very deep team. To compete with PSU they’ll need some guys to jump levels a bit though.
