Every time Preston Stout has participated at the Big 12 Championship, he has won.

This week at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Stout became the third player in the Big 12’s history to win two conference individual titles, and he helped Oklahoma State to its 12th Big 12 title (since the league was formed in 1997).

Oh, and Stout is only a sophomore. In fact, the five Cowboys who competed this week were all underclassmen.

Stout entered the final round tied for fourth after even-par golf in the first three rounds. He started the final round with four birdies in the first five holes and didn’t look back. He beat second place Connor Williams (Arizona State) by two strokes. Stout finished with a 3-under 67 in the final round.

Southern Hills is not for the weak of heart, as it gave teams fits this week. OSU was the only team to finish under par, finishing 2-under. The Sun Devils came second at 9-over, and then there was a big jump to Texas Tech in third at 28-over. Cincinnati, Arizona, West Virginia, Baylor, UCF and Iowa State all finished at least 50-over, with the Cyclones bringing up the rear at 73-over as a team.

OSU sophomore Ethan Fang finished tied for fifth at 1-over after closing strong with a 1-under 69 in his final round. He also had the low round of the weekend when he shot a 5-under 65 in the second round. Eric Lee, also a sophomore, was the next Cowboy on the leaderboard, finishing ninth with a four-round score of 283. Swedish freshman Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson finished tied 14th after carding a 68 in the final round. Sophomore Gaven Lane finished in a tie for 17th.

It’s the Cowboys’ fifth win this season, as they also finished atop the leaderboard at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup in October, the Amer Ari Invitational in February, the Haskins Award Invitational earlier this month and the Mountaineer Invitational just last week.

OSU is a Top 5 team in both of the major polls, with Coaches Poll listing the Pokes at No. 3 and Scoreboard having OSU at No. 4. Up next, the Cowboys will await their regional, which will be played May 12 to May 14. This year’s NCAA Championship will be held May 23 through 28 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.
