There were 747 of them, and there should have been more.

Mason Rudolph, Justice Hill and the Oklahoma State offense broke the school record for total yards in a single game at Saturday 59-16 homecoming victory despite not scoring until the final drive of the first quarter. Once the Cowboys got their first points, it was open season with Bears on the loose.

The old record was set in 2012 against Louisiana-Lafayette with 742 yards despite Wes Lunt getting injured and J.W. Walsh and Clint Chelf coming in for relief.

Rank Opponent Year Yards
1 Baylor 2017 747
2 Louisiana 2012 742
3 Baylor 2010 725
4 Tulsa 2010 722
5 Kansas 1988 717
6 Houston 2008 699
7 Wyoming 1988 698
8 Iowa State 2008 682
9 Savannah State 2012 682
10 Pittsburgh 2017 676

The Cowboys had it all working Saturday once they caught their rhythm. Even backup quarterback Taylor Cornelius made a few nice running moves on his way to a 40-yard score.

Rudolph threw for 459 yards. Hill ran for 117, and that’s all she wrote.

Rudolph missed some open throws that could have probably sent the mark over 900, but I suppose 747 will do fine. Rudolph said it all started with success running the ball. He said a willingness and effectiveness on the ground will always lead to points, which made his job fun.

“Anytime you got a pocket like I had today with guys blocking their butts off and creating lanes for our backs, I feel very comfortable,” Rudolph said.
