OSU Recruiting: Fast-Rising 2020 Texas Cornerback Prospect Picks up Cowboy Offer

Published

on

Fast-rising Texas cornerback Jalen Kimber, a Class of 2020 standout from Mansfield Timberview in Arlington, Texas, picked up a scholarship offer from Oklahoma State on Tuesday. It was part of a two-offer Tuesday for the 6-foot prospect, who also raked in a scholarship from Texas A&M.

Kimber is now up to six scholarships and counting, and his rise may just be beginning as he preps for his upcoming junior season. Let’s take a look at who’s in the mix and what the Pokes are looking at with him.

Scholarship Offers

In addition to his two newest offers from A&M and Oklahoma State, Baylor, Houston, TCU and SMU have also jumped on board with official offers. Given his platform playing for a premium high school in Arlington, I’d suspect Texas, Texas Tech, Arkansas, OU and others will surely ramp up their interest soon.

Scouting

Kimber is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 36 overall corner in 2020 and the 560th-ranked prospect in his high school classification. Both that service and Rivals have him pegged currently as a three-star recruit, though, due to his meteoric recruiting rise, that seems likely to change soon.

Kimber was one of dozens of prospects who camped at Oklahoma State last Thursday, and by all indications, he impressed. At least enough to warrant an offer shortly after his visit. He also recently visited Texas and Texas A&M, which would seemingly indicate that an offer from the Horns may be imminent.

Mike Roach of 247Sports observed Kimber at Prime 21 in mid July, and noted that he was among the standout prospects at the camp.

Two under the radar guys I really liked were 2021 Kennedale DB JD Coffey and 2020 Mansfield Timberview DB Jalen Kimber. Coffey has a big frame for his age, but he showed great technique and understanding of coverage principles today. Kimber was textbook in his movement, and his burst on certain breaks looked very good. [247Sports]

High School

Kimber attends Mansfield Timberview in Texas, just outside of Arlington. He played almost exclusively at cornerback as a sophomore last season, but given his respectable size and speed, he could potentially fit a number of spots in the secondary at OSU.

Two things stand out to me about Kimber’s tape: One — he covers a ton of ground. He’s super speedy, so any space he gives up as a cushion or after being burned, he can typically make up quicker than most. That’s a hugely important trait for a cornerback.

The second — he has excellent ball skills and a nose for the ball. He seems to generally be very aware of where the pigskin is, and doesn’t get lost on plays. From turning his head when the ball is in the air to shedding blocks downfield to make a tackle, he’s very heady and uses it to his advantage.
