OSU Softball: Cowgirls’ Comeback Secures Series Win over Utah

A week after winning their first Big 12 series of the season, the Cowgirls got another.

No. 21 Oklahoma State stormed back from an early 6-1 deficit to defeat Utah 9-8 on the road. It follows a 2-1 win over the Utes on Friday to secure their second conference series win.

A night after pitching seven innings in Game 1, Ruby Meylan got a win in relief. She allowed just one hit and no runs in the final 2 2/3 innings while striking out one and walking one Ute. But the Cowgirl bats had to do some heavy lifting after OSU found itself in a deep early hole.

Claire Timm got the Pokes on the board with an RBI double in the top of the first, but the Utes poured it on with a six-run first inning and the Cowgirls were stuck playing catchup.

The comeback was fueled by a pair of three-run innings, in the third and fourth. Lexi McDonald’s two-RBI single got things going in the third before Audrey Schneidmiller’s single to centerfield pulled OSU within 6-4.

Then Rosie Davis smacked a two-run homer against a full count. McDonald grounded out in the fourth to score another run to complete the comeback, at least momentarily.

Each team traded runs over the next couple. Things were tied at 8-all when Amanda Hasler hit a career milestone and the game-winning run thanks to her RBI double in the top of the sixth.

Preslee Downing, a freshman, got the start but lasted less than an inning as the Utes came out swinging (and connecting). Downing gave up six runs from nine batters with just five hits.

RyLee Crandall took over at the end of the first and ended the inning and would last 3 2/3, allowing two runs. Meylan moved to 14-6 with the win.

With their third-straight win, the Cowgirls improve to 24-10 and 6-5 in Big 12 play. They will look for the sweep at 12 p.m. Sunday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
