The Cowgirls proved this weekend they were better than two of the teams who took part in the Stanford Invitational, but they did have some trouble with the hosts.

Oklahoma State is off to a 3-2 start this season after playing Stanford twice, Cal twice and San Jose State once between Thursday and Saturday. OSU won its games against San Jose State and Cal by a combined score of 32-5, finishing two of those games in five innings. But No. 17 Stanford edged out the Cowgirls to open things on Thursday, and then the Cardinal run-ruled OSU on Saturday evening.

Here’s a little bit of a recap of the weekend.

Results

Game 1: Stanford 4, OSU 2
Game 2: OSU 9, San Jose State 0 (5 innings)
Game 3: OSU 8, Cal 3
Game 4: OSU 15, Cal 2 (5 innings)
Game 5: Stanford 10, OSU 0 (5 innings)

Standouts

Aubrey Jones: Only a freshman, Jones exits the opening weekend with the highest batting average among Cowgirls who took at least seven ABs.

She went 5-for-11 (.455) at the dish with all of those hits coming in the two games against Cal, where she went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored before going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored in the second game against the Golden Bears. Jones hit a homer in the first game and had a triple in the second.

Jayelle Austin: Another freshman, Austin comes out of the opening weekend with the team lead in RBIs thanks to a pair of home runs. OSU hit four home runs this weekend with this Owasso native accounting for half of them.

She went 5-for-13 (.385) at the plate, picking up a hit in every game. Her homers came in the opener against Stanford — a two-run shot — and in the second game against Cal — a grand slam.

Preslee Downing: We might as well make this section freshman-themed, as rookie pitcher Preslee Downing’s first appearance went about as well as it could have — a five-inning shutout.

Another Owasso Ram, Downing threw the San Jose State game, putting up the five shutout innings while giving up three hits and striking out three. Downing didn’t issue a walk but did hit a batter.

She also threw momentarily in one of the Cal games, and the Golden Bears had more success against her, getting two runs off two hits and two walks in 1/3 of an inning. But still, the San Jose State performance provided a strong start.
