Oklahoma State, then Oklahoma A&M, secured the program’s first undefeated season in 1916-17.

Legendary coach Ed Gallagher lead his squad to a 2-0-1 record in the third season of OSU wrestling history. Gallagher beat Emporia State 15-10, Texas 20-5 and tied Arkansas at 12.5.

Since then, the Cowboys have had another 45 undefeated seasons, most recently 2018-19 when John Smith’s program went 15-0 and closed out their season with a thrilling 27-12 win over Iowa in Gallagher-Iba Arena in front of 13,811 people.

In a season mired by a global pandemic, this year’s dual finale with OU won’t have near the crowd or excitement that Iowa one had, but it still will have some historical significance.

The Cowboys are 9-0 on the year and will look to make it 10-0 on Sunday vs. OU. A win here will give OSU its 47th undefeated season in the program’s 102 seasons of competition. It will also give John Smith his eighth undefeated season since taking the helm at OSU for the 1991-92 season.

This year will probably not be viewed the same way that some other undefeated dual seasons are, as the Big Ten did not wrestle out of conference and many of the blockbuster matches that usually occur in an Oklahoma State regular season did not happen. But a win on Sunday vs. OU would create a historic footnote for the program.
