For the second straight season, the Cowboys’ undefeated run comes to an end at the hands of their rival Hawkeyes, and the dual’s biggest upset wasn’t short on storylines.

Oklahoma State lost to Iowa 21-16 on Sunday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes had a 14-11 lead heading into the 184-pound match that featured Dustin Plott taking on Angelo Ferrari, A.J. Ferrari’s younger brother. The two had an excellent match that ended with a Ferrari takedown in sudden victory.

To get to that point, Ferrari had a 3-2 lead in the third period when he selected bottom. That proved to be a mistake, though, as Plott rode Ferrari the entire period and secured a riding-time point to tie the match. The ride had a few slick scrambles that Plott always came out in control on. It felt the momentum was starting to shift his way after Ferrari took him down in the third period.

Like his older brother, Angelo wrestles low, making it tough to get to his legs. But with how Plott rode Ferrari for the entire third, you felt good about Plott’s chances in ride outs. In sudden-victory, Ferrari got in on an initial shot that led to an impressive scramble. It looked like Plott was starting to come out on the right end of it, but a whistle was blown for a potentially dangerous hold, sending the wrestlers back to the middle of the mat. Then Ferrari got in on another shot and was able to finish.

The obvious OSU storyline is that he is A.J.’s younger brother. The Iowa storyline is that Angelo isn’t a regular in the Hawkeyes’ lineup. He’s been wrestling some high-profile spot duty while keeping his dates low enough to maintain a redshirt.

Iowa locked up the dual in the next match when top-ranked 197-pounder Stephen Buchanan beat No. 6 Luke Surber with a 10-1 major decision. Wyatt Hendrickson got some points back for the Pokes in the heavyweight match with an 18-3 technical fall against No. 11 Ben Kueter.

The dual started with the teams exchanging major decisions.

Troy Spratley beat Joey Cruz with a 17-3 major. Spratley scored five takedowns in the match.

Iowa answered when Drake Ayala beat surprise entrant Rin Sakamoto 11-1. Sakamoto is a freshman from Tokyo, Japan. This was his dual debut and seemingly came out of nowhere. He gave No. 2 Ayala some issues early, but Ayala scored a late takedown to secure the major decision.

Tagen Jamison had an answer, though, as he beat Jace Rhodes with an 8-0 major decision win to give OSU an 8-4 lead. The game of major-decision tennis was broken when No. 3 Kyle Parco beat No. 18 Carter Young 7-1. It was an admirable job from Young to keep the Hawkeyes from bonus points, as OSU led 8-7 after four matches.

The 157-pound match was a lot of fun. It ended with No. 3 Jacori Teemer beating No. 14 Caleb Fish 10-6, but Teemer was hanging on by the end of that. Teemer gave up two stalling points at the end of the match, but he held on to give the Hawkeyes their first lead of the night at 10-8.

Cameron Amine suffered what looked to be a rather painful injury in his 165-pound match against No. 2 Michael Caliendo. Amine was fighting off a single-leg in the first period when he looked to hyperextend that leg. He was in visible pain and was already wearing a mask with his headgear to protect his face. After taking some injury time, Amine gutted it out and continued wrestling. Caliendo ended up winning the match via a 10-1 major decision.

Dean Hamiti beat Nelson Brands 8-1 at 174 pounds. Hamiti was closing in on a takedown when the third period ended that would’ve given him a major decision.

That wraps up the Cowboys’ dual season. They’ll start to prep for the Big 12 Championships March 8-9 in Tulsa.
