The pre-seeds and preliminary brackets for this week’s Big 12 wrestling tournament were released on Wednesday and here’s how it all broke out for the Cowboys.

  • 125-Nick Piccininni — No. 1
  • 133-Reece Witcraft — No 6
  • 141-Dusty Hone — No. 4
  • 149-Boo Lewallen —  No. 1
  • 157-Wyatt Sheets — No. 3
  • 165-Travis Wittlake — No. 1
  • 174-Joe Smith — No. 5
  • 184-Anthony Montalvo — No. 2
  • 197-Dakota Geer — No. 5
  • 285-Austin Harris — Unseeded

The Cowboys are projected to have three champs and four finalists with Piccininni, Lewallen, and Wittlake all projected to win and Anthony Montalvo projected to finish second.

Based on the current conference allocations, if everyone with the exception of Austin Harris wrestles to their seed, they will all qualify for the NCAA tournament. Harris will need a few upsets to get an automatic bid.

Seeds will be finalized on Friday but typically don’t deviate much unless there are injuries or other unforeseen issues.

Each wrestler receives placement points for where they place in the tournament. Based simply on that here’s what the top three schools would get.

Weight Oklahoma State Iowa State Northern Iowa
125 12 9 10
133 4 6 0
141 7 10 9
149 12 9 4
157 9 12 0
165 12 4 0
174 6 9 12
184 10 6 12
197 6 0 0
285 0 10 7
Total 78 75 54

That means this could easily come down to bonus points and any of these schools picking up or giving up even the most minor upsets could flip the team race. This should be a very tight one.

Fans can follow the first three sessions on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ while the championship session will be broadcast by Fox Sports Regional Networks. The tournament will take place at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. March 7-8.
