OSU Wrestling: Seeds, Brackets Released for Big 12 Championships
Teague Travis is back.
Magic Man David Taylor had one more surprise up his sleeve for the Cowboys’ 2025 lineup: Teague Travis returns to wrestle at 149 in Tulsa.
The Big 12 Wrestling Championships are Saturday and Sunday at BOK Center. The conference released the seeds and brackets for the event Monday, which featured a returning-from-injury Travis in the lineup. First, here are OSU’s seeds:
125 — Troy Spratley, 4
133 — Reece Witcraft, 4
141 — Tagen Jamison, 4
149 — Teague Travis, NR
157 — Caleb Fish, 2
165 — Cameron Amine, 3
174 — Dean Hamiti Jr., 1
184 — Dustin Plott, 2
197 — Luke Surber, 1
HWT — Wyatt Hendrickson, 1
Travis was Oklahoma State’s starter at 157 pounds last season, finishing fourth at Big 12s and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. He was OSU’s 157-pound starter at the beginning of this season as well but suffered an injury, and Caleb Fish bumped down from 165 to take over. Travis’ last match was Nov. 17. The 149-pound weight class is one Travis is familiar with. He went 17-2 at the weight as a redshirt freshman during the 2022-23 season. He started last season there as well, going 6-1 before jumping up to 157. Carter Young had held down the 149-pound spot for much of the season, going 10-10.
If any Cowboy is allowed to feel hard done with the seeds, it’s probably 125-pounder Troy Spratley. Spratley came in at No. 3 in the most recent nationwide Coaches’ Ranking but is a 4 seed in Big 12s. He’s 17-3 this season with only one of those losses coming against a Big 12 foe (3 seed Jett Strickenberger pinned him on Jan. 19). His other two losses are to the No. 1 and No. 4 guys at the weight nationally. Arizona State’s Richard Figueroa is the top seed. He’s 12-1 this season and was at No. 2 in the most recent Coaches’ Ranking. Spratley would meet him in the semifinals. Northern Colorado’s Stevo Poulin is the 2 seed. He is 17-1 and was at No. 6 in the Coaches’ Ranking.
Signs were pointing toward Reece Witcraft being OSU’s guy at 133 toward the latter part of the season. He spent much of the year going back and forth with Cael Hughes. Witcraft gets the 4 seed at Big 12s and a bye in the first round.
The on-paper 174-pound final would be the most anticipated match of the tournament. Dean Hamiti Jr. earned the top seed with a 19-0 regular season, but Keegan O’Toole is the 2 seed at 12-0. O’Toole is a two-time national champ but has missed a lot of this season (including OSU’s dual against Missouri) because of injury.
Northern Iowa has seven of its wrestlers seeded within the top three of their weights, with OSU just behind in that aspect with six. The Cowboys lighter weights got a lot of 4 seeds, though, as OSU has nine wrestlers seeded in the top four to UNI’s eight. It’s hard to imagine, but the last time the Cowboys outright won a Big 12 title was in 2020 shortly before the world shut down. OSU shared the title with OU the next season.
