OSU Wrestling: Wyatt Sheets’ Fall Propels Pokes to Win Over Northern Iowa

on

The Cowboys went up to Northern Iowa Saturday night to kick off a two-dual Big 12 road trip vs. the Panthers and Iowa State.

They felt the sting of missing Trevor Mastrogiovanni early, as Kyle Gollhofer majored Zach Blankenship to open the dual. Daton Fix got the Cowboys back in the win column with an 8-1 decision over Big 12 finalist Kyle Biscoglia.

Carter Young had the upset of the night for the Cowboys, taking out 8th-ranked Cael Happel. Young got up big early taking a 12-1 lead into the second period. Happel clawed back a bit with a few takedowns but Young held on for a 15-7 major decision. At 149, Victor Voinovich got an early takedown and lead on Colin Realbuto, but riding time and a third-period takedown for Realbuto flipped the match back to Realbuto. This tied the dual back at 7.

At 157 Kaden Gfeller and Derek Holschlag traded escapes and takedowns in regulation to take a 4-4 match into overtime where Holschlag picked up a takedown to win and give Northern Iowa a 10-7 lead.

After intermission, Wyatt Sheets wrestled Austin Yant at 165. The match was even into the third period when Yant took a shot and Sheets rolled him through for a fall. This put the Cowboys back up by three and gave Sheets one of his biggest wins of the season. Sheets had lost four straight heading into that match. Dustin Plott continued the momentum with a workmanlike 7-3 decision putting up the Cowboys by six.

Travis Wittlake did not wrestle at 184 as the Cowboys sent out Gavin Stika. Stika narrowly avoided giving up a tech fall to Parker Keckeisen. This brought the dual within two heading into 197. Luke Surber’s match stream cut out but he ultimately used riding time to edge Wyatt Voelker 2-1 and give the Cowboys a 19-14 lead going into HWT.

Konner Doucet just needed to avoid a tech fall or pin to give the Cowboys the dual. After a third-period reversal and some riding time for Tyrell Gordon, Northern Iowa took the bout, but the Cowboys held on to win the dual 19-17.
