Panic Button?

I’m not punching it yet but I’ve got my hand hovering and ready for action at the first sign of another Kevin Tway double-bogey or Talor Gooch triple. The Cowboys are treading water in seventh place after a paltry +5 Round 2, twelve back of leader Georgia Tech.

There’s nothing to get too worried about yet (get back to me after two guys are staring 45s in the face on the front nine tomorrow), but still a 3-stroke lead on the seventh match play slot (of eight) leaves quite a bit to be desired.

There were positives though. Or a positive, in the form of the reigning United States amateur champ.

Peter Uihlein better be getting a back massage from his dance-team girlfriend or in a whirlpool of ice right now because he carried his squad around Karsten for four straight hours on Wednesday. His front nine was spectacular and included three birdies and an eagle en route to a 31. The junior from Florida couldn’t find that magic on the back nine but still went low, carding a 69 to follow up his 73 on Tuesday, good for sixth place (at the time of this writing).

As Sean Martin pointed out, that’s the only sub-par round of the entire tournament by an Oklahoma State golfer.

Probably not what Mike McGraw had in mind when he found out his team would host this year’s championship.

Kevin Tway was better than yesterday but found two holes (a triple and a double) troublesome on the way to his 74. Morgan Hoffman stayed consistent with a 73, Talor Gooch did what freshmen are supposed to do with a 77, and Sean Einhaus brought up the rear (the very distant rear) with a fat 80.

It’s not exactly the stuff title runs are made of but again, this team is probably going to be ironically saved by the match play portion of the week, the part they hate the most.

I’m not sure if the pressure is getting to them, or if the putts aren’t falling, or what the issue is, but they need to get out of the gates in a hurry tomorrow. I don’t need to be monitoring my computer screen begging for some lowly sap from Kennesaw State to double #18 to get OSU into the 8th match play spot.

At least OU is making a run at +50?
