Poll Recap: Fans Split on Spring Oklahoma State Athletic Interest

Written by Phillip Slavin

It may seem like a slow season for sports, but only if the only thing you care about is football. Even then, it’s not completely dead.

Professionally, the NBA and NHL playoffs have reached the conference finals.

Collegiately you’ve got men’s and women’s golf, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis all either in or heading toward the postseason. And with Oklahoma State’s athletic department currently enjoying a golden age, all of those listed above are in the exciting time of their seasons.

But, as with all things in life, we are all different and like different things. Which was exactly the case for this week’s poll.

Nearly a third of fans who voted — or 247 to be precise — say they are following football recruiting most closely of all activities right now. That’s understandable, especially with numerous players committing for both the 2019 and 2020 classes recently.

Postseason baseball and softball was a close second, followed by basketball recruiting. The comments this week pretty much echoed the divided answers.

“Anything but recruiting. It’s depressing to see all these guys that put OSU in their “top” picks and then commit somewhere else.” – B

“I am very hungry for an NC in men’s golf” – OSUgary

“Baseball…I’m hoping the Cowboys have another CWS run in them!” – Jason Sutton

“Basketball recruiting is much more interesting in my opinion, Boynton had a lot more work to do as well.” – Blake Goddard

“For me it’s periodically searching for #bodybyglass on social media while eating Cheetos” – Darth

I personally voted for the baseball postseason. Oklahoma State needs to win two of their final three games to win the Big 12 regular season title. Doing that, and a good showing in the Big 12 tournament, could have the Cowboys hosting a regional. That’s all big and something I’ve really enjoyed following. Throw in how well the softball squad has been all year and it’s hard not to get excited about what they might do in the NCAAs.

But I get if you picked any of the other three. While you might wish for four- and five- star recruits (OSU has already landed a four-star for 2020 by the way) it’s always great to see kids committing to play football in Stillwater.

Meanwhile, Boynton has really been impressive in his first full recruiting cycle. Bringing in six new kids, all of which have the potential to make an impact on next season, has been impressive. Plus, he’s landed some real talent.

And golf? A title on the cowboys’ home course would be amazing and the perfect way to cap what has been an historic season for them.

Whatever you picked, enjoy. It’s all been fun to watch, and all is far from finished.
