Poll Recap: Not Surprisingly, Oklahoma State Fans Turned Bulldog For Rose Bowl

The age ole debate.

Do you cheer for your rival if it helps the conference (S-E-C! S-E-C!) or do you cheer loudly for whoever your conference foe is facing off against?

According to most OSU fans, at least when it came to OU in the Sugar Bowl, the answer was the latter.

Of the 2,967 people who voted, 1,810 voted for Georgia. That’s actually lower than I thought it would be. The comments were mostly fantastic. There were a few rambling diatribes and ridiculous OU fan comments** and terrible, recycled retorts. But there were also some gems.

“I attempted to root for OU, but every time I saw or heard about Mayfield and every time Boomer Sooner was played by the band I threw up a little inside. Pretending to be a Sooner fan was difficult.” – Christopher M. Hoover

“I will never root for OU football. Ever. No fan of OSU, Texas, TCU or anyone else in the conference ever should either. Rooting for your competition is stupid. How hard is it to understand that the better they do, the worse it is for us (recruiting, etc.)?” – Big Jon

“I was rooting for Baker honestly. It’s easy to hate him because he’s not on your (our) team. He makes college football fun.” – Alexander Pratt

“more so, that OU doesn’t embarrass the Big 12. Which they didn’t, and they lost so kinda a win win for me, but wouldn’t have minded they win a close game.” – Shannon Mallory

“Georgia! I enjoy betting ou fans during the post-season. It’s always hard to get a hold of them after the game though to collect.” – Still Original

Personally, I fell on the side of rooting for OU just like I was rooting for Clemson. Mostly I was rooting for what happened, not to happen. An all SEC-Championship game.

On that note, I wanted to include this final quote from the site.

“”How does a big 12 team gaining that kind of national attention do anything to hurt OSU?” Wrong question, it should be “How does a Big 12 team gaining that kind of national attention do anything to HELP OSU?” And the answer is that it doesn’t. OU winning more doesn’t help us land recruits or win the conference or anything else.” – Darth

This is a great point. Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida fans will all be sitting at home chanting “SEC SEC” on Monday when Alabama or Georgia win the national championship.

But that happening isn’t suddenly going to make recruits show up at their schools, or help them win 8 games next season.

I’ll finish on this point. I’ll root for all other Big 12 teams come September in the non-conference. You want a strong conference. But in bowl games? Who cares. I care about OSU winning their bowl (check), end the season on a high note (check), and get ready for basketball season.

**Side note to all the OU fans coming onto the site to argue with OSU fans on an OSU blog.
