Poll Results: Majority Of OSU Fans Loved Barbed Wire Helmet

God sent the Israelites manna from heaven. The blogging gods sent me barbed wire helmets in the middle of a Big 12 title race. It has been incredible. Blogging gold.

I sent out a poll question on Tuesday to gauge how much OSU fans enjoyed them, and 53 percent of you voted that you loved it. I’m with the 16 percent. I thought it was ugly. Actually I thought it was really ugly.

I don’t mind the base of the bandana print at all, but when you throw on the orange barbed wire, marshall badge and orange face mask, woof. Just go all black with the print and make the chin straps orange or something. Make it more subtle.

This does not mean (I can’t believe I have to explain this) that I think the OSU equipment folks are bad or that they have done a bad job. I think they have been elite this year. I thought they whiffed on Saturday. Carson Cunningham said it well on our pod on Monday.

“I thought they were way too busy, way too much going on,” Carson said the podcast. “The bandana print looks good on the collar and the sleeves, but on the helmet? I didn’t like it. It felt like they tried to cram so much onto a small space. It looked too busy to me. I’m waiting for a map of campus. Where’s Morrill Hall? Where’s the Union? Where’s the stadium?”

On to the comments.

Colin Bishe: On a level of atrocious, they’re up there with the orange helmet with orange brand that were worn in 2013 vs TCU. The equipment staff have done a great job with helmets in recent years, but this isn’t one of them.

Alum in Az: Flat black with orange OSU brand and chrome orange big Pete are my favorites… but this is just behind. Fantastic tie in to the new unis.

Nate Knapp: Voted ugly, not because of the barbed wire, which I liked, but because of the stupid badge.

Trigiddy: Ways to fix this helmet: Lose the orange barbed wire, black face mask (I’m excited we now have orange, just not for this helmet, no side stickers (when starting with a base this busy, less is more.)

Nate: People who like these are nuts. There are arena football teams who would shy away from those helmets. It’s easily the worst helmet we’ve worn since the upgraded uniforms in 2011. The orange face mask on the black helmet is just overboard and trying too hard. But hey, at least Justice was comfortable wearing his high school helmet.

Mark: This is going to be as scorching of a hot take as Nate’s down there… But I actually thought that since they went with something this ‘busy,’ they actually didn’t go ‘busy’ enough. The print looked too random and scattered, whereas if they bunched the pattern up to where it’s nearly seamless (in auto culture it’s called “sticker-bombing”) it would’ve pulled the look off better.

Adam: I’ve seen TCU do a helmet of similar taste before with ghost-painted patterns behind the main logo and been envious of it. I’m glad OK State finally have something that compares (and in my opinion exceeds). I think more importantly it will make recruits do a double take on who is playing, and isn’t that where mass recruiting starts?

TJ: I thought, for one game they were great. Would not want them full time, but maybe a constant for senior day/night. The bandana print didn’t really show unless hit with light, at least on TV. I like the Marshall’s badge over a Pete decal any day. Also hate chrome, orange chrome with predominantly orange Pete is just dumb looking. The orange facemark was a nice addition too. Personally my favorite regulars are the flat black with orange brand. As for the one offs, you can’t beat the Bronco for homecoming a few years ago.
