Porter’s Notebook: Oklahoma State-West Viginia

Cleaning out the highs and lows of another Oklahoma State win.

I dropped my 10 thoughts over here, but I wanted to empty the notebook (quickly) before moving on to Bedlam.

• Chuba’s spats look insane. Give him the Heisman.

• The Jelani rollout on fourth-and-goal made me weak. Where are these calls when Sanders is starting?!

• A Slack comment that made me giggle: Bedlam 2016 proves Gundy will not allow a ball to take flight if it’s raining and his QB has small hands.

• Maybe the new goat GIF.

• No energy early, which is always tough. Felt like a 4A Oklahoma high school game! Is West Virginia equipped for big-time conference games in November? I realize they aren’t good, but Hennessey High (shout out to Mrs. Pistols) is more hyped this time of year.

• This is unreal!

• I can’t get enough WVU fan shots!

• Gotta say the WVU crowd makes everyone from Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa look straight bourgeois.

• Good stat from OKC Dave here:

Conference play only. Quarters where the opponent didn’t score:

2017: 5
2018: 5
2019: 10 (and counting)

• Swaggy D?

• I don’t think DB’s arm is quite as strong as Sanders’. Not necessarily a knock because Sanders has a really good arm, but I found myself wondering if some of his sideline throws were ever going to get there.

• Additionally, Brown seems like he’s a lot more accurate than Sanders.

• The TD pass by Doege in the second quarter was a joke. Back foot, perfectly dropped in behind Bernard. Related: Doege annoys me more than any other Big 12 QB I’ve seen so far this season.

• A thing from Slack: Doege looks like the guy who shows up to the party uninvited and then tries to start a fight with someone. He also looks older than me, and I’m 34 years old.

• It’s crazy that Doege is getting free games the rest of the way. Like, I get the rule, but I don’t know that it was ever intended for guys like Doege to be able to play the last few games without repercussion. I’m for it, but it’s still wild that he’ll be a junior again next year after playing three real conference games to end a season.

• I might be anti-spot reviews. It just is what it is. Let it be. I just don’t care enough, and it seems like an impossible thing to get right.

• Felt like the start of the second half was big for Chuba’s Heisman hopes.

• DB went deep on the first two plays of the second half. Wonder if that was to open things up for Chu.

• Chuba looked tired in the second half. Maybe it’s because they’ve ridden him like Seabiscuit since the end of August.

• Lol at this.

• The QB hair in this game is … something.

• It’s never good when a Harvard-Yale climate control protest is the most exciting part of the third quarter of an Oklahoma State game.

• NSFW!

• I believe ESPN just told me OSU has 35 rushing yards going into the fourth. [looks up stats] OK, good they were wrong. It’s up to 41.

• After I realized OSU had 170 (total!) yards going into the fourth, I looked up the 10 most futile games of the Gundy era. It’s not a pretty scene. OSU finished with 285 and narrowly escaped this list. Bring me Iowa in a bowl.

• This gem was fired off in The Chamber during the game: Are we pretending to be an SEC team so that the NCAA goes easy on our basketball team?

• I think Braydon Johnson is my favorite player on this team.

• Print the shirt.

• Love this handshake celebration. Simple, elegant.

• Feels like OSU throws a lot more slants with Brown. More trust in terms of accuracy there, I guess.

• Forget what I said earlier about Chuba looking tired. He’s a monster. I want 250+ in Bedlam and Heisman pose in the west end zone at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

• So smart of OSU to send people on late when WVU was running players in at the 2:40 mark in the fourth quarter. They were late, and OSU knew it and took advantage of running the clock all the way down.

• Felt good about this one.

• The announcers were surprised about WVU going for it on fourth-and-1 at 2:40? Were they going to … kick a field goal?

• OSU is 38-2 in the Gundy era when not turning the ball over.

• Here’s a good one from OSU’s media relations: Over the last two weeks, OSU has allowed a total of 65 rushing yards on 46 carries to its opponents.

• As of this writing (1:40 left in the game) there have been only 17 drives in this game. There have been a lot of OSU games I’ve covered in which OSU approached 17 drives on their own.

• Air Canada.

• OSU had 10 TFL on Saturday, which is its most all year.
