Preseason Coaches Poll Shows Eric Morris Some Respect, but Cowboys Still Have Work to Do

STILLWATER — The Cowboys are back in the Coaches Poll, sort of.

​The preseason poll released on Tuesday had the Cowboys in the others receiving votes category with 22 points, which amounted to an unofficial ranking of 37th. For context, the 25th team, Missouri, received 158 points, though the three teams directly ahead of OSU have them beat by less than 10 points.

Although not exactly something to celebrate, given how the last two years went, any Cowboy fan would likely be ecstatic to see Oklahoma State viewed as a top 40 team.

Oklahoma State last appeared in the coaches poll in week five of 2024 when the Pokes were 20th in the nation. They dropped down into the unofficial 34th spot the next week and completely fell out of the rankings until Tuesday.

Given a Week 2 showdown with No. 2 Oregon, Eric Morris is either going to have to pull off a huge upset in his home debut or wait a bit to get the Pokes back in the poll officially as a top 25 team.

Oklahoma State also travels to No. 24 Houston on Oct. 17 and hosts No. 12 Texas Tech on Nov. 14.

The Cowboys dodge the other two ranked Big 12 teams, No. 15 BYU and No. 21 Utah. Based on the poll results, coaches expect the Cowboys to finish seventh in the Big 12 behind TCU, ranked 28th with 63 points, and Arizona, ranked 31st with 50. The Cowboys also miss those two teams in the regular season.
