QB Grant Gunnell Eliminates Oklahoma State From Consideration

Published

Long-time quarterback target Grant Gunnell, a four-star 2019 prospect who at one time was trending heavily in favor of the Cowboys, has now nixed OSU from consideration. He told 247Sports this week that he’s down to four finalists as he nears a decision.

“I’m looking at Arizona, Ohio State, Cal and UCLA,” Gunnell said. “I’ve already taken official visits to Arizona and Ohio State and unofficial visits to Cal and UCLA.”

Gunnell told Rivals the same earlier in the week, hinting that he had three favorites — and OSU was not among them.

The news isn’t exactly a surprise, though it is a bit disappointing. Gunnell showed a strong interest in joining a pass-heavy offense like Oklahoma State, which led to his strong lean towards OSU at one point, but he cooled quickly after a visit to Ohio State.

Gunnell was trending towards the Buckeyes following his trip to Columbus, but now it may be a toss-up after Kevin Sumlin and Arizona have entered themselves into the mix. Gunnell was once committed to Texas A&M under Sumlin’s regime, but backed off his pledge when the Aggies hired Jimbo Fisher.

Oklahoma State still has several options worth exploring in the 2019 class to land a quarterback, but at this point in the cycle, most have already come off the board, such as Graham Mertz (Wisconsin commit), Taulia Tagovailoa (Alabama commit), Bo Nix (Auburn commit) and Grant Tisdale (Ole Miss commit).

Zach Calzada, a 6-foot-3 pro-style prospect out of Buford, Georgia, is the latest name to pop up on the radar for OSU. He was offered by the Cowboys in mid-May, which was part of a 17 (!!) offer month for the 2019 gem. As things stand now, NC State appears to be a frontrunner, though OSU could get involved more heavily with Gunnell all but officially off the board for the Pokes.
