Quotable: Eight Great Lines from the Oklahoma State-Iowa State Game

Saturday was wild, and then both teams talked about it. Matt Campbell, Mike Gundy, Mason Rudolph and Chad Whitener all discussed OSU’s 49-42 win over the Cyclones. Let’s get to the best quotes.

Gundy on ISU triple-teaming James Washington

“Poor James. They put a guy on him. They put another guy over the top. They put another guy halfway. They just move all three of them around all the time so everybody has to catch passes or you have to run the ball. It worked for 523 yards for us. James gets to go out there and line up and hang out. When you’re the best receiver in the country, that’s what you’re going to get.”

Gundy on Penalties

“We had too many penalties. Bundage got into some kind of an altercation with a guy. That upsets me. Seven got called for a clothesline. He needs to not do that. Those things concern me.”

Matt Campbell on OSU

“Today’s tough. It’s a gut-wrenching loss. It’s not easy, but college football isn’t easy. It’s a game of inches and our job is to win every inch, and we came up a little bit short today. I give credit to Oklahoma State, they’re obviously a really good football program, and they made more plays than we were able to make by the end of the day.”

Gundy on Tylan Wallace

“We need to play him more. Yurcich and Dunn must have lost a bet or something because I don’t know why he’s not in the game more … I do know why, because 28’s in the game. When he’s in the game and we’ve thrown it to him, he’s made plays. I’m excited about his future, what he brings to the table.”

Gundy on the Rudolph QB run on 4th down

“When (Yurcich) first said it, I thought he lost his mind. I thought he thought J.W. Walsh was playing. I looked over there and I said, ‘It’s six and a half yards.’ That’s an eternity for him.” Tied a little RPO to it. Had three options. “I thought it was a hell of a play call. I thought it was a hell of a run by him.”

Mason Rudolph on Marcell Ateman

“He’s playing with confidence,” Rudolph told the Tulsa World. “He’s going to be a heck of an NFL receiver one day, whatever team gets him next year, and he’s just been putting on a show lately. He’s very confident, very consistent.”

Chad Whitener on his career winding down

“Finding something like this in the environment we have, with the culture we’ve created, it’s gonna be hard to recreate this anywhere else in life,” Whitener told the Tulsa World.

Gundy on OSU Drama

“We should petition for increased ticket sales and charge people more to come watch us play. We’re definitely exciting, and people get their money’s worth. And they don’t change the channel so they get all the commercial value. It’s every week for us. I said this seven weeks ago that it will be this way in the (Big 12). It’s every week in this league with the way things are built.”
