Record Book Look: Oklahoma State’s All-Time Leaders in Points Scored

A bunch of kickers and some guy named Barry Sanders.

Points scored is an interesting stat.

It feels like mobile quarterbacks should have a leg up in it, but passers don’t get credit for points on passing touchdowns. They made a whole other stat called touchdowns responsible for to work that out.

So, with offenses booming, points scored is more of a kicker’s deal with extra points becoming plentiful.

Here are Oklahoma State’s five career leaders in points scored.

1. Ben Grogan (2012-16) — 433

Most kickers have an up-and-down relationship with their fan bases, but Ben Grogan left Stillwater with a solid resume: all-time leading scorer and Bedlam game-winner.

Grogan made 68 field goals and 229 extra points as a Cowboy, but the most memorable ball he put through a pair of uprights came in 2014 on a rainy night in Norman. Grogan hit a 21-yard overtime game-winner against Bedlam rival Oklahoma to keep OSU’s bowl streak alive.

His career-long was a 47-yarder in that same season. He took only one field goal from 50+ during his career and missed it.

2. Dan Bailey (2007-10) — 370

OSU’s only Lou Groza winner, Dan Bailey hit 57 field goals and made 199 extra points as a Poke. He was an All-American in 2010 (the same year he won the Groza). He was also the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year that season.

Bailey set and tied his career-long in the same game. In 2010, he hit a 52-yarder against Louisiana in the first quarter and turned around and hit another 52-yarder in the fourth.

Bailey’s NFL career has spanned nine seasons thus far. He has hit 87.3 percent of his pro field-goal attempts. That’s sixth-best in league history.

Here is Bailey beating Texas A&M in 2010.

3. Barry Sanders (1986-88) — 360

Wait a second, this guy isn’t a kicker.

OSU’s lone Heisman winner scored a program-record 60 touchdowns as a college player. That’s 10 more than second-place Thurman Thomas. Thomas is the next non-kicker on this list having scored 302 points (good for sixth).

Sanders is all over these record book looks, so I won’t spend too much time on him. Just enjoy these highlights.

4. Matt Ammendola (2015-19) — 359

Matt Ammendola had one field-goal attempt in his redshirt freshman season, and he nailed it from 53 yards away.

Ammendola started his career as a big leg with questions about accuracy, but he finished his career having made 76.9 percent of his field-goal attempts. That’s sixth best all-time.

He hit two 53-yarders in his career. He is the only player in program history with two from at least 53 yards.

5. Cary Blanchard (1987-90) — 331

Cary Blanchard made 67 extra points and 11 field goals during Sanders’ Heisman-winning season.

He hit 56 field goals and 163 PATs in his career. Blanchard’s career-long was 52 yards. He hit three field goals from that distance, against Northern Iowa in 1990, Oklahoma in 1989 and Missouri in 1988.

He was a three-time All-Big Eight first-team selection.
