Points!

In the 1910s, OSU had three games of 100+ points.

That’s an exciting stat, but apart from the fact that OSU beat Phillips 134-0 in 1914, Southwestern 117-0 in 1916 and Phillips 112-3 in 1913, I can’t tell you a whole lot about those games.

So, for this Record Book Look, we’ll look at OSU’s five highest-scoring games of the modern era (since 1945).

1. Savannah State on Sept. 1, 2012 — 84

It looked as if the Cowboys didn’t lose a stride from their Fiesta Bowl-winning squad in 2011 when 2012 started.

Not only did the Pokes score 84 points in this game, they also held Savannah State to a fat zero.

OSU led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter and 49-0 at the half. Nine of the Cowboys 12 touchdowns came on the ground with Joseph Randle (2), Jeremy Smith (3), Desmond Roland (3) and Corey Bennett (1) all having rushing scores.

It was Wes Lunt’s first game of college football, and all he did was go a perfect 11-for-11 for 129 yards. J.W. Walsh had a game-high 149 yards and two passing TDs. And Clint Chelf also threw for a score.

Quinn Sharp punted once. Savannah State’s Jacob Thomas punted 12 times.

A sophomore, Roland recorded the first 100-yard rushing performance of his career and did so on only nine carries. He had 104 yards.

T2. Texas Tech on Oct. 31, 2015 — 70

A classic OSU vs. Texas Tech shootout, Patrick Mahomes and the Red Raiders started this game with a 17-0 lead.

But then the 1-2 punch of Mason Rudolph and J.W. Walsh got going and led OSU to a 70-53 win. Walsh had 167 passing yards on only five attempts to go with two passing TDs. He also ran for a team-best 80 yards and another score.

Rudolph had 285 passing yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes had 480 passing yards and five total TDs.

Tech was up 38-28 at the half, but in the second half, OSU was getting scores from everywhere. Jalen McCleskey returned a punt 67 yards for a score. Raymond Taylor had a 28-yard touchdown run and Ramon Richards ended the game with a 59-yard interception return.

James Washington had only four catches on the day, but had 200 yards with those thanks to touchdowns of 75 and 73 yards.

T2. Kansas on Oct. 8, 2011 — 70

Kansas actually struck first against the eventual Big 12 champs … but then those champs scored 56 straight to go into halftime.

OSU eventually won 70-28. Brandon Weeden threw 28 passes (a low number for his standards). He completed 24 of those for 288 yards and five touchdowns. Clint Chelf came on in relief. He finished 14-for-21 for 206 yards and two scores.

Despite all the scoring, OSU narrowly eclipsed 100 rushing yards with Jeremy Smith finishing with a team-high 39.

Quinn Sharp had 764 yards from kickoffs.

T2. Southern Illinois on Sept. 29, 1973 — 70

OSU went just 5-4-2 (two ties!) in 1973, but the Cowboys put a 70-7 hurting on Southern Illinois.

As a team, OSU ran for 435 yards and seven touchdowns in the game. That’s tied for the eighth-most rushing yards any OSU team has ran for in a game, and the seven rushing TDs are tied for the second-most in a game.

5. UTSA on Sept. 19, 2015 — 69

This 69-14 OSU win started with a fumble recovery turned touchdown and ended with a fumble recovery turned touchdown.

Mason Rudolph completed 17 of his 23 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Carson and Raymond Taylor combined for 180 rushing yards and three scores, and the Cowboys coasted two win No. 3 of what would be 10 straight to start that 2015 season.
