If Drew Mestemaker is going to follow Eric Morris to Stillwater, one of the first steps of that took place Tuesday.

Mestemaker is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer and On3’s Pete Nakos. Wording was a little interesting on the reports, with Hummer tweeting that Mestemaker is “considered likely to enter the transfer portal,” while Nakos’ said Mestemaker is “expected” to enter the portal.

Mestemaker is the national leader in passing yards with 4,129. He’s tied for second nationally in passing touchdowns with 31, trailing only Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

If you’ve found your way to this website, you probably know Mestemaker’s story by now with how it pertains to Morris, OSU’s new coach. But, if you haven’t …

Mestemaker didn’t start a varsity game at quarterback as a high schooler, instead playing safety and punting at Vandergrift High in Austin.

Morris got a call from a quarterback coach he knew about Mestemaker and eventually took him on as a walk-on ahead of the 2024 season.

He took part in five games as a true freshman at UNT that year, including starting the Mean Green’s bowl loss to Texas State, a game in which Mestemaker threw for 393 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for another 55 yards and a score.

After not starting at QB in high school, Mestemaker was North Texas’ starter entering 2025, as only a redshirt freshman where he put up all those ridiculous numbers.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 211 pounds, Mestemaker eclipsed 300 passing yards in five games this season and threw for at least 200 in all of them. He threw for 608 yards and four touchdowns against Charlotte in October. Even in his worst game in terms of yardage, Mestemaker threw for four touchdowns and no picks with 211 yards against Washington State in September.

Mestemaker won the Burlsworth Trophy this season as the nation’s best former walk-on. He was also named the American’s Offensive Player of the Year and was named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Offensive Player of the Year.

The widespread belief is that OSU will be a favorite in the Mestemaker market because of the relationship with Morris, but we’ll have to see how the process plays out.
