Scoring Machine Anthony Roy Named to Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Watch List
‘I think Anthony Roy’s gonna have a chance to be a professional for a long time.’
STILLWATER — Oklahoma State is Anthony Roy’s sixth college, but one thing hasn’t change despite his various stops: he can put the ball in the basket.
Roy, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound shooting guard from Oakland, California, was named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Top 20 Watch List.
Playing under OSU alum Doug Gottlieb at Green Bay last season, Roy led the country in scoring through 11 games, averaging 25.7 points a contest. Roy suffered a fractured ankle, though, in a game against UC-Santa Barbara, shutting him down for the remainder of the season.
But then Roy transferred to Oklahoma State. He missed the SMU exhibition this past weekend, but put up 28 points on a ranked Auburn squad in Birmingham a few weeks back, hitting a handful of tough, step-back 3s to lead OSU to a win.
“It’s a fantastic luxury and something we didn’t have, obviously, last year,” said OSU coach Steve Lutz of Roy’s shooting ability. “I’m excited about what Anthony did against Auburn the other night, and again, I think he’s got a long, long ways on the other side of the ball for growth. And if he can do both of those things because he rebounded it, he shot it. The downside against Auburn was he some careless turnovers. He had six turnovers. But if he becomes a two-way player, I think Anthony Roy’s gonna have a chance to be a professional for a long time.”
It’s not just fans who have been impressed with Roy’s scoring abilities. OSU’s roster features a dozen new players. With all of these guys coming together, this is a lot of their first prolonged looks at what Roy can do.
“Man, in practice, I’ll be in awe of some of the moves he do,” OSU point guard Kanye Clary said. “I’m like, ‘Oh, my goodness that’s tough.’ Coach is like, ‘Get back!’ I’m like, ‘Oh, my fault, coach.’ But when you play with guys like that, I feel like he’s an energy giver. He’s just special. Like, you get on the court, you just know certain stuff and certain shots are gonna go in because he’s highly capable of a lot of tough shots. Y’all gonna see that throughout the year.”
After averaging 18 points a game as a senior at Dublin High School in Oakland, Roy started his college career at San Francisco under current Florida coach Todd Golden. Roy played 47 minutes as a true freshman, scoring 32 points in that stretch.
Roy then played at Wenatchee Valley in Washington state for the 2021-22 season. He averaged 23.2 points a game that year, posting 18 outings of at least 20 point, including a season-high 37.
Then it was on to New Mexico State, where Roy appeared in 16 games, averaging 10.3 points per game while shooting 40% from 3.
Roy then transferred to Langston of all places. He was an NAIA All-American for the 2023-24 season after averaging 18.4 points a contest on 42% 3-point shooting. He helped lead the Lions to the NAIA national title game before joining Gottlieb at Green Bay.
“It’s a fun thing to watch, I would say, being on that side of it,” freshman center Mekhi Ragland said. “I’ve really never played with a guy who can really score the way that he scores. So, it’s really just like amazing to see how he gets to his spots and the way he makes his shots.”
