Session 2 Recap: Pokes Send Six Into Championship Matches on Sunday

The Cowboys didn’t wrestle quite as well as we would’ve like to see in the second session today, but it wasn’t too bad. Here are the scores from the semifinals this session as six Pokes made it to the finals and OSU leads the rest of the teams at the event by 28.5 points.

125: No. 1 Nick Piccininni (OSU) MD No. 4 Christian Moody (Oklahoma), 11-3
133: No. 3 Kaid Brock (OSU) dec. No. 2 Montorie Bridges (Wyoming), 6-2
141: No. 2 Dean Heil (OSU) dec. No. 3 Josh Alber (Northern Iowa), 2-0
149: No. 2 Boo Lewallen (OSU) dec. No. 6 Davion Jeffries (Oklahoma), 10-4 SV1
165: No. 2 Chandler Rogers (OSU) fall No. 3 Demetrius Romero (Utah Valley), 2:11
174: No. 1 Taylor Lujan (N. Iowa) dec. No. 4 Jacobe Smith (OSU), 10-7
184: No. 1 Drew Foster (N. Iowa) dec. No. 4 Keegan Moore (OSU), 13-8
197: No. 4 Jake Smith (West Virginia) dec. No. 1 Preston Weigel (OSU), 4-3
285: No. 1 Derek White (OSU) dec. No. 4 Dustin Dennison (Utah Valley), 8-1

On the consolation side Tristan Moran wrestled two matches, and he’s now done.

157: No. 12 Tristan Moran (OSU) dec. No. 6 Justin Thomas (Oklahoma), 6-4
157: No. 7 Alex Mossing (Air Force) dec. No. 12 Tristan Moran (OSU), 9-7

In all the wins the Cowboys looked pretty good. Brock didn’t have the offense you usually see with him and Lewallen was taken to OT by a guy he beat comfortably a few weeks ago, but they all got out with wins in matches they were supposed to win. In your conference tournament that’s what you want to see.

It isn’t always pretty, but wins here are hard to come by.

Nick Piccininni got a good win over a scrappy 125 from OU. Brock avenged his loss to Montorie Bridges, and Bridges has been wrestling well lately. Dean Heil got a rideout to win a tight one in a very Dean Heil-like fashion. Boo beat a tough kid in OT to make his first NCAA tournament. Rogers got another throw and fall. Derek White also dominated as expected.

Those are the six where OSU sent wrestlers to the finals.

In terms of the three losses OSU incurred in the championship brackets, at 174 I thought Jacobe Smith looked good when you consider he was coming off of an injury and wrestling the No. 1 seed. They got in a scramble at one point where Jacobe ended up on his back. That 4-point swing was the difference in the match. Other than that he was getting in on shots, winning ties, and wrestling pretty well.

At 184, I don’t know that Moore would’ve won that match had he not been hurt, but he was in it for a bit. His injury was a big swing. He gave up the takedown then, because of the injury time, Foster was allowed to take down. That was a big point swing. Otherwise he was scoring points and still wrestling hard at the end of the match. Moore definitely looked a lot better this match than last time out against Foster.

At 197, I’m a little concerned with Weigel’s health. Obviously he’s been injured, but I don’t know that he’s 100 percent currently. It may be that he’s just still getting back in the rhythm of wrestling.

With that, as good as he is on top he has to avoid the stall warnings when he’s there. Some of the stall calls were questionable, but if he doesn’t get those stall calls he wins. He should be able to bounce back and finish third, but I’d watch closely to see how he holds up physically.

All three of Jacobe, Moore and Weigel need to win their consolation matches on Sunday to get into the NCAA Tournament. All three will wrestle lower seeds.

It’s hard to be upset with Tristan Moran. It’s tough to jump weights like that and he was in the match with Mossing. He definitely could’ve pulled it out. I’d say it was a heck of an effort by him, but unfortunately his season is done.

Here’s a look at the brackets for Sunday.
