Seven Things to Know as Oklahoma State Tries to go 10-2 vs. ISU Under Gundy

Oklahoma State has a chance to go 5-1 this weekend by beating Iowa State before it heads into the meat of the Big 12 season. The Pokes’ only loss to the Cyclones since 2008 was, well you know what it was, and they haven’t lost at home since 2000.

Of course we’ve already seen this year that the “haven’t lost at home since the Clinton administration” stat is a pretty meaningless statistic when your offense can’t get off the ground. Regardless, this weekend should be a fun one, and I’ve found seven things in the game notes to help you follow along a little bit better.

1. Speaking of Offensive Ineptitude

Iowa State is in the bottom 10 (of 130 teams) nationally in the following categories.

• Total offense (122nd)
• Rushing offense (125th)
• Scoring offense (123rd)
• First downs (126th)

With Calvin Bundage back, OSU should (SHOULD) feast. Also, OSU is 56-0 under Gundy when holding opponents to fewer than 20 points. Iowa State is averaging 17.5.

2. But Dat Red Zone O

Somewhat hilariously, Iowa State is also tied for 1st nationally in red zone scoring percentage. They’re 11 for 11 in the red zone, but they’ve also only scored four touchdowns. To put this in perspective, they’re tied percentage-wise with Penn State, which has scored 23 TDs in 25 attempts.

3. Ames Ownership

Mike Gundy can run his record against Iowa State to 9-2 with a win on Saturday. This compelled me to look up his current record against all Big 12 teams.

• Kansas: 10-1
• Iowa State: 8-2
• Texas Tech: 11-3
• TCU: 4-2
• West Virginia: 4-2
• Baylor: 8-5
• Kansas State: 6-4
• Texas: 6-7
• Oklahoma: 2-11

4. Get to Halftime?

Oklahoma State has now led at halftime 100 times in the Mike Gundy era. They’re 93-7 in those games. That’s a pretty remarkable number. I have no idea how it compares nationally, but it has to be pretty competitive.

5. Justice vs. Barry

Justice Hill’s career: 551 carries | 3,186 yards
Barry Sanders’ career: 558 carries | 3,797 yards

So Justice needs six straight 100-yard carries and a 12-yarder to surpass him through 558 carries. Should be no problem.

6. Who No. 1?

How about this? Oklahoma State is No. 1 in Big 12 rushing offense (231 yards/game) and Big 12 rushing defense (113.4 yards/game). Can’t rush the ball, though.

 7. A sophomore!

If Tylan has another 100-yard receiving day, he will tie Jalen McCleskey for 10th all time in 100-yard games and get within two of Adarius Bowman and Josh Stewart and four of Dez. ????????
