Softball Recap: Cowgirls Claim First Big 12 Series of Season Against Iowa State

Published

on

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls essentially played four games this weekend with the series finale against Iowa State going 12 innings. Oklahoma State lost that game 5-4, but that was only their second loss in their past 16 contests.

The Cowgirls pitched well in all three games. Some uncharacteristic offensive blunders led to their loss Sunday, but OSU is in a good position 31 games into the season. Here’s a look at the Cowgirls’ record through 31 games in each of the past few years.

  • 2018: 23-8
  • 2017: 21-10
  • 2016: 17-14
  • 2015: 16-15
  • 2014: 16-15

In short, it has been a while since the Cowgirls had this good of a record at this point in the season. Here’s what happened in Cowgirl Stadium this weekend.

Friday – Oklahoma State 8, Cyclones 1

Samantha Clakely pitched her fifth complete game Friday, allowing only one run. She got some early run support when Whitney Whitehorn blasted a grand slam over the left-field wall in the first inning.

Sydney Pennington added an RBI single in the third, and the Cowgirls tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Vanessa Shippy finished 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk.

Saturday – Oklahoma State 7, Iowa State 2

The Cowgirls powered through an early deficit to capture the series against the Cyclones on Saturday. Emmie Robertson got the start, but she ran into some trouble in the first, allowing a home run and an RBI single. The next three innings were spotless for Robertson, who pas pulled in the fifth inning in favor of Logan Simunek. Simunek pitched a nearly perfect trio of innings in relief, allowing only one baserunner.

OSU trailed 2-1 entering the fifth inning but exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of fielder’s choices gave the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead, and Taylor Lynch’s two-RBI single made it 5-2. The Cowgirls earned seven hits, and the Cyclones were held hitless after they scored the pair of first-inning runs.

Sunday – Iowa State 5, Oklahoma State 4 (12 innings)

This marathon of a game was reminiscent of OSU’s first Big 12 series of 2017. The Longhorns came into Stillwater for a three-game series, and the Cowgirls took the first two games. OSU completed the sweep in an extra-inning victory, but Sunday’s game was 12 innings. They completed the sweep of Texas in eight.

Madi Sue Montgomery and Lynch provided home runs as the Cowgirls entered the seventh inning with a 4-1 lead, but a solo home run and an error in the outfield with two outs provided ISU with another chance. At one point in extras, the Cowgirls had the bases loaded, but a groundout into a double play ended their scoring threat.

Both Clakely and ISU’s Emma Hylen excelled in extras, as neither team scored from the eighth inning until Taylor Nearad, who finished 3-for-6, had a solo home run in the 12th that proved to be the difference.

What’s next

Cowgirl Stadium will play host to Wichita State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before OSU travels down to Lubbock for a three-game series against Texas Tech.
