Spring Football Notebook: Sherman E. Smith Training Center Gets New Decorations

There’s a new addition to the interior of Sherman E. Smith Training Center: banners commemorating the Cowboys’ bowl appearances.

That’s right. When Oklahoma State held its media availability after practice on Friday, these were hanging from the rafters.

The Cowboys had their third spring practice Friday, which was the first practice media was allowed to talk to Gundy and players.

Gundy’s best quote of night came when asked about the banners.

“I feel like we live here now instead of just renting the place,” Gundy said. “You know how when you rent places you don’t have any pictures? Y’all are at this age in your life, right? Up until I was about 28 years old, we never hung any pictures because we got fired so many times we were never in the house for very long.”

There’s no banner for the Camping World Bowl, but that’s only because OSU’s graphics team wants it done perfectly. OSU still hasn’t received its rings from winning the Camping World Bowl, and a picture of the rings are needed to make the highest-quality banner possible.

Gundy said that banner should be done in about four weeks, and they plan on adding banners commemorating previous conference championships as well as banners for major award-winners.

Cowboys to utilize their plethora of running backs

Gundy thinks the Cowboys could be as deep and talented at running back as any team in the country.

“I don’t know what anybody else has, but if you look at what we have, if LD continues to come on, and Chuba does what we think he can do until he gets developed, we should be pretty good at that spot and be very deep,” Gundy said.

After Justice Hill, however, there will be a committee of ball carriers. It’s important to preserve Hill’s body and keep him fresh, which is something Gundy emphasized Friday.

“I was concerned in a big way last year, as I told you guys, about him taking too many hits,” Gundy said. “I would like to keep him limited to 16-18 carries a game, let some of those other guys take some of those hits.”

OL depth at a premium this spring

Gundy didn’t go into depth, but he mentioned the pair of offensive linemen — Marcus Keyes and Dylan Galloway — won’t be participating in practices this spring.

It seems as though Cornelius has the early nod among on-campus QBs

It might not be surprising, but Gundy had a quote that somewhat confirmed the early quarterback depth chart. He said other than Wudtee, the second team is mostly freshman.

Most assumed Cornelius had the edge early on, this is further affirmation of that.
