Mike Boynton picked up a transfer who played in Boynton’s home state.

Syracuse transfer forward Woody Newton committed to Oklahoma State on Friday, becoming the Cowboys’ first commitment in the 2021 cycle.

A 6-foot-8, 200-pound power forward from Maryland, Newton played in 11 games for the Orange as a freshman this past season. He averaged 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds a contest.

Although those numbers might not jump off the page, his per 40 numbers are more enticing, as he averaged just 7.9 minutes a game for Syracuse. Per 40 minutes, Newton averaged 17.5 points and 9.2 rebounds.

He was a four-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class out of Mt. Zion Prep. He initially chose Syracuse over offers from Arkansas, Georgetown, Kansas State, Penn State, Seton Hall, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and others.

Boynton needed to add to his frontcourt and help on perimeter shooting, and Newton provides both of those things, as he shot 39% from 3 this past season.

Newton is OSU’s first in what could be three commitments in this cycle, with Cade Cunningham, Ferron Flavors and Dee Mitchell all being off the scholarship books for next season.
