Taking Stock of the OSU Basketball Roster
With a new era of OSU basketball underway with Brad Underwood, comes a new level of restored interest in the program (speaking for myself here). Brad Underwood inherits a pretty decent team, with several veteran leaders expected to be back along with some intriguing young blood.
OSU officially lost their 6-11 center signee Gorjok Gak on Wednesday, but will they go after another player or does that even out the roster? Oklahoma State has 13 available schollies for next season, and as it stands now, here’s the 13 I would expect:
1 | Jawun | Evans |
2 | Tyree | Griffin |
3 | Joe | Burton |
4 | Tavarius | Shine |
5 | Phil | Forte |
6 | Igor | Ibaka |
7 | Leyton | Hammonds |
8 | Davon | Dillard |
9 | Jeff | Carroll |
10 | Mitch | Solomon |
11 | Thomas | Dziagwa |
12 | Lindy | Waters III |
13 | Cam | McGriff |
However, there are three players with intrigue to follow on that list that are on the current roster, but could look at options elsewhere:
- Leyton Hammonds
Hammonds will be eligible to graduate before next season, and could elect to transfer via the graduate transfer rule if he chose to. With Forte returning and most of the core from last season still intact, I think Hammonds is the most likely to return of the group. But he hasn’t come out and made a statement – yet. Until then, he’ll be one to watch.
- Tyree Griffin
Griffin is obviously going to play second fiddle next season assuming Jawun Evans will return. He got a lot of playing time last season, thanks in large part to Evans’ shoulder injury that sidelined him for a great deal of the year. I would project Griffin to be the backup just based off his experience going into his junior year. But he’ll have to compete with freshman phenom Thomas Dziagwa – a guard with better size (6-foot-4) and also appears to be a more capable scorer.
Here’s what he tweeted the night Brad Underwood was hired:

- Davon Dillard
So … Davon Dillard. He’s still listed on the okstate.com roster. But he had a pretty up and down freshman year. Maybe a new coaching regime will be a good change for him .. or maybe a new regime will be a reason for him to try and find a fresh start elsewhere. Do I want him back? Yes. Do I think he’ll be back? I guess that’s why he’s on my question mark list.
