Texas Tech nerd box score
What do the advanced stats tell us about Saturday’s game against Texas Tech?
Oklahoma State’s defense was very bend but don’t break-y on Saturday even if it didn’t seem like it at first glance. Texas Tech had 29 negative swing points — in which it reached OSU’s 25 and failed to convert touchdowns (two FGs, a pick, and two loss of downs).
OSU also converted its two big opportunities into touchdowns (14 positive swing points) — the blocked punt as well as the punt return by Josh Stewart all the way back to Texas Tech’s 11.
One stat that continues to impress me is OSU’s ability to start with incredible field position. Since I started doing these box scores (Kansas State game) OSU has never had an average starting field position of worse than its own 30. I’ll run the numbers this week but I would imagine the Pokes are near tops in the country in this category.
Lastly, OSU hasn’t been wasting a lot of yards lately. 87 “wasted” yards (yards on drives in which it doesn’t score) is really, really good. Turnovers at the end of long drives are killer — for momentum and otherwise — and OSU is getting it done with efficiency and a good ground game right now.
