The Five Best Quotes from OSU and Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl

The Pokies beat the Hokies in the Consolation World Bowl on Thursday night. But the win was definitely meaningful as it counts as No. 10 for an historic third-straight year.

There was plenty to talk about after Mike Gundy’s 8th bowl victory. Let’s jump into my five favorite quotes.

The Cowboys averaged nearly 8 yards per play against a Hokie team that had been allowing only 4.8 through 12 games coming in. OSU only reached that mark or higher against Tulsa, Pitt and Baylor, three teams that operate in a different world defensively than Virginia Tech.

That accomplishment was not lost on Mike Gundy.

• “I was shocked that we could average 8 yards a snap. I was hoping we could average 5.5.”

Virginia Tech DC Bud Foster said he really didn’t have a point total he was aiming for but counts holding OSU to 30 as an accomplishment.

• “If we could have held them under 30, I felt like we could have won the football game. We didn’t hold them under 30. They had 30. I think we might have held them to the second-least points they’ve had all year, but we didn’t capitalize on a couple of opportunities and gave up a couple of plays and that was the difference in the game.”

Mason Rudolph had several nice things to say about his four-year deep-ball partner and friend, Jame Washington, but this from Rudolph summed up the Prez nicely.

• “Very seldom that you get a player of his ability to come to practice every single day and approach it like it’s a game rep and set the culture for the younger guys. “They come in and say, ‘Hey, this is the Biletnikoff receiver, and he’s not taking too many plays off in practice.’ It’s a tribute to coach Dunn, too.”

Washington talked about receivers coach Kasey Dunn and what he’s meant to his career.

• “He just told me, ‘Thanks for the ride.’ Coach Dunn’s helped me a lot over these past four years. Coming out of high school, I felt like I was still raw. I needed the guidance to become a college football receiver. Without him this wouldn’t be possible.”

The good news is that Dunn is still at OSU and he’s got plenty of talent returning.

Rudolph on the future for OSU, a bonafide stud in Justice Hill and a slew of returning talent at the skill positions for 2018.

• “Sky’s the limit for him [Hill]. He’ll be the guy coming back to kind of build the team around. Obviously still got a lot of great receivers in Tylan Wallace, Dillon Stoner, Tyron Johnson — a lot of guys that can play.”
