Trae Young Puts On a Show With Big 12-Record 48 Points in Bedlam Defeat

The Trae Young hype was validated (again) Saturday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Although fourth-ranked Oklahoma lost 83-81, Young had a record-tying performance, scoring 48 points (tying Melvin Ejim’s Big 12 record) on 14-of-39 shooting. It was his third 40-point game of the season.

He needed a lot of shots to get there, but coming two points shy of a 50-burger is crazy, especially at the college level.

The outburst broke a Bedlam record, surpassing Jawun Evans’ 44-point performance that took place in GIA two years ago. Cody Stavenhagen of The Tulsa World made note of another record, which Young then surpassed moments later.

Young hit 8-of-20 shots from beyond the arc, including a few that would have dropped jaws in an NBA stadium. The dude has some serious range.

“Are we ever going to not give up a career high to somebody?” joked Mike Boynton in the postgame. “I mean, 48 to that guy. I’m just kidding. That kid is phenomenal.”

Young had five boards and eight assists to complement his scoring, but he had also had seven turnovers and took 39 of OU’s 82 shots. Additionally, he made the mistake of letting Kendall Smith attempt a game-tying three instead of fouling near the end of regulation.

Oklahoma State did an excellent job of denying Young the ball at the end of overtime, and his long-distance heave for the win at the buzzer was way off.

Young didn’t get much help from his teammates in the scoring department; nobody else in crimson reached double digits.

“It’s hard to say you’re going to take 48 from a guy,” added Boynton. “What I do like is that no one else scored in double figures. I think he worked really hard to get that 48. For a four-minute stretch, everything looked easy. He got himself going there in the second half and put on a pretty good show … He did what great players do. He put on an absolute show for everyone who was here and everyone who was watching.

“Trae Young is the best college basketball player since Steph Curry. I don’t think it’s close. Because of the way he makes other people better. He’s elevated that team to being a national championship contender.”

Yes, the recurring theme of opposing guards having career days against OSU still exists, but the Cowboys left GIA as winners tonight, marking their second home Bedlam victory in as many years.
