Trick Play Delight: Similar Looks Set Table for Tylan Throwback to Corndog

WACO, Texas — After a half season of vanilla, Oklahoma State has been adding all sorts of toppings to its probably underrated offense over the past two weeks. They ran I-formation and went for every fourth down they looked at against Texas last week. This week at Baylor it was more of the same (with more trickeration tossed in).

It’s a fourth and 3 with 90 seconds left that will get all the attention, but on fourth-and-5 on the Baylor 33 with just a few minutes left in the third quarter, OSU pulled off one of the better plays they’ve run all season.

Taylor Cornelius threw a backwards pass to a previously-in-motion Tylan Wallace, which simulated a play they’d run just one drive earlier (which Tylan had scored on). Here’s that play.

I asked Yurcich if the double pass was the same play.

“No sir,” he said.

I said it looked similar.

“That’s correct,” he deadpanned.

Regardless, they sure looked like the same play!

“We were hoping (the previous play would set this one up),” said Yurcich.” You always want to complement your looks. If you’re in a particular run, you want to have a throw off. Complementary offense, that’s all you’re trying to do.”

It led to a first down and, eventually, to another Tylan TD, his second of the game.

“I was real happy,” said Wallace. “That was a play I’ve been thinking about all week. I have to make this throw, I can’t mess this up. That was a big thing that I’m happy they trusted me to make that play.”

“Being a receiver I don’t really throw it like that obviously,” he added. “Plus it was fourth down … it was a little nerve-wracking. I just tried to stay calm and tried to execute it. [Cornelius] came over and told me ‘Hey that was a good ball, man.’ I said, ‘I appreciate it.'”

He joked (I think) that playing around with his brother (a former QB) Tracin probably didn’t hurt the coaches’ trust in him to be able to make the play.

“Working out with Tracin and everything so I feel like [coach] felt like I could somewhat throw it a little bit,” said Wallace. “(I wanted to) make sure I catch it first and make sure it gets to him. It doesn’t matter if it’s spiraling or anything. I just have to make sure it gets to Corn. I’m just happy I was able to do that.”

It led to 24 receiving yards for somebody who previously had zero of them and this reminder from Clint Chelf on Twitter.

And while it didn’t lead to a win, it was a fun wrinkle for the second week in a row and a sign that this offense is evolving beyond what we thought it could be for most of the first half of the year.
