What Daton Fix Did To Get The No. 1 Seed

A look at the path Daton Fix took to get the 1 seed at the NCAA tournament.

As a Junior World Champion and multiple time World medalist Daton Fix was the No. 1 ranked recruit in his class and came to Stillwater with some of the highest expectations of any wrestler ever.

He was then dropped into one of the toughest weight classes in the entire country in his first season as a Cowboy. Everyone that follows college wrestling agrees that 133 is absolutely stacked. John Smith has said it’s the deepest weight he’s ever seen as a coach.

Daton Fix has navigated that incredibly tough weight this season to become the No. 1 seed at the NCAA tournament.

I thought I’d compile a list of all the NCAA qualifiers he beat to acquire that seed.

Name NCAA Seed NCAA Finalist All-American
Ethan Lizak 6 1 1
Montorie Bridges 12 0 1
Gary Wayne Harding 18 0 0
Devan Turner 32 0 0
Sean Nickell 17 0 0
Austin Gomez 13 0 0
Nick Suriano 3 1 1
Matthew Schmitt 16 0 0
Austin Gomez 13 0 0
Brandon Paetzell 20 0 0
John Erneste 8 0 0
Austin Desanto 7 0 0
Gary Joint 29 0 0
Matthew Schmitt 16 0 0
Montorie Bridges 12 0 1
Total 15 2 4

Fix wrestled Bridges and Gomez each twice.

That’s 15 NCAA qualifiers, four top 10 seeds, fourteen top 20 seeds, two NCAA finalists and four All-Americans! All as a freshman.

He’ll have to navigate through all them and many more to win a title next weekend. Regardless of how that plays out his body of work to get that No. 1 seed is certainly impressive.
