What Rashod Owens’ Commitment Means for Oklahoma State

What to expect from new OSU commit Rashod Owens.

Oklahoma State needed him, and they got him. On Tuesday morning Class of 2020 athlete Rashod Owens committed to the Cowboys, culminating a brief recruiting process that saw him get an offer just a week ago.

Owens is commitment No. 18 for OSU in the cycle, and it comes just a day ahead of the early signing period. Here’s what it means for the Pokes.

Much-needed skill talent: This class has been built around the trenches, with four offensive linemen and one defensive lineman making up a huge chunk of the outgoing scholarships. As the class has unfolded, it’s become clear skill talent — receiver and running back — is the only major positional need that needed some work. And so OSU offered Owens and bagged a nice, underrated athlete who should be able to play several positions in college.

What position does he play? Good question. TBD! At Roosevelt High last season, he played almost exclusively at running back — and looked pretty great doing so. But … the expectation is that he will get a look at OSU playing receiver. You’ve heard the saying Don’t put baby in a corner, right? That’s probably how we should view Owens. He’s not a lock to play any one position. As Adam Lunt noted, he’s a versatile athlete, part of OSU’s strategy to accumulate talent then figure out position later.

Wait, who did he spurn for OSU? I said Owens was an underrated talent, and I meant it. He didn’t pick OSU over Alabama. He picked OSU over the following schools: Colorado State, Army, Fordham, Georgia Southern, UTSA, Tulane, Texas State, New Mexico State, Kansas, Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist. So OSU was his only Power 5 offer (sorry, Kansas).

Why Gundy is going to love him: It’s become cliche to note that Gundy loves kids who never say a word, love their family, chew with their mouths closed, etc — the whole bingo card. Still, that’s exactly the type of player OSU goes after, and after hearing about Owens, I imagine Gundy insta-offered without hesitation.

“This young man is making people better around him by excellence and all that he does,” said his coach on his commitment video. “He has been making the team better as a whole.”

Said another coach: “He’s a great kid, a true model of everything we want in our program.”

Dez already likes him: Several years ago, Chuba Hubbard got the stamp of social media approval from Dez Bryant. Today, it’s Owens’ turn.
