Which Hoops Recruits Visited Oklahoma State For the Boise State Game?

Mike Boynton used the lights of a big noncon football matchup to illuminate his recruiting trail.

STILLWATER — Saturday was admittedly a monstrous day for the Oklahoma State football team on the gridiron. But it was perhaps a bigger one for the basketball program, which used the marquee football game as a hosting event for a number of big-name recruits.

There were both official and unofficial visitors who were on hand to take in Boise State weekend festivities. Let’s recap them.

OFFICIAL VISITORS

Avery Anderson | 6-2, 170 | Combo Guard

Anderson, a skilled guard from Justin, Texas and Northwest High School, has nearly 10 scholarship offers to his name, among them OSU, Florida, LSU and TCU. But the Cowboys are close to locking him up.

All seven of his 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions are currently reading black and orange. That’s a good sign, especially for his top-100 pedigree. He’s rated as one of the best guards in the country in the 2019 classification.

Boynton visited him in his home last week, so you know the staff is working hard to secure his commitment.

Kalib Boone | 6-8, 190 | Center/Power Forward

Kalib Boone committed to Oklahoma State earlier this year, but hosting him on campus for an official is still important. Since his Cowboy pledge, he’s exploded with attention nationally, so making sure he’s locked in — and featuring him alongside other top prospective recruits — is a stroke of genius by the coaching staff. He’s ranked in the 247Sports Composite as the No. 100 overall player in the 2019 class.

Keylan Boone | 6-6, 175 | Small Forward

Same last name, same blood. Keylan is the twin of Kalib. Both were on campus together for officials this weekend, both are currently Cowboy committed, and they’re both (currently) the only commitments of the 2019 class for OSU.

Kalib is the shot-blocking, rim-running big man of the bunch. Keylan, meanwhile, is the perimeter guy who can get a bucket and has position versatility on both ends of the floor. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 214 overall player and a top-50 prospect in 2019 at his position. Both Boone’s play at Tulsa Memorial.

Marcus Watson | 6-6, 205 | Shooting Guard

Watson may be the biggest unknown of the official visit list. Right now, many are projecting he’s Georgia Tech bound, which would make sense given his home town is Buford, Ga. But the Cowboys have been steady with him throughout his recruitment, and he wouldn’t be making the trip to Stillwater if he wasn’t interested in hearing what the coaching staff had to say.

UNOFFICIAL VISITORS

Rondel Walker | 6-2, 160 | Shooting Guard

Putnam City West’s Rondel Walker was one of the early offers for the current coaching staff in mid 2017, and he’s still being recruited. Walker is a 2020 prospect so he’s got some time to consider his option before he makes a decision. But OSU figures to be near the top when he narrows his list. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 98 player in the 2020 class and the No. 25 overall shooting guard in 2020.

Trey Alexander | 6-3, 160 | Shooting Guard

Like Walker, OSU also tabbed Alexander as an in-state target early on in his recruitment. Alexander is a 2021 (!) recruit, but right now only OSU and OU have offered, per 247Sports. He’s a 6-3, 160-pound high-flyer who can be a multi-positional fit on the wing for any team. He’s at Heritage Hall.

Bijan Cortes | 6-1, 160 | Point Guard

This one is definitely one to watch. Cortes is a Kingfisher High School standout who hasn’t yet made his way into the radars of coaching staffs, but OSU is eyeing him close. He’s a 2021 ball-handler who has a ton of talent. No offers to his name … yet.

Matt Stone | 6-4, 180 | Small Forward

Matt Stone is another Class of 2021 Kingfisher standout who also made his way to Stillwater for an unofficial. He’s a 6-4, 180-pound recruit who also has yet to pick up a scholarship offer early on in his recruitment.
