Wyatt Sheets to Wrestle at Last Chance Open in Ames, Iowa on Sunday
Sheets will be looking to secure an NCAA bid for the Big 12 conference at 157
Pistols Firing has learned that OSU 157-pounder Wyatt Sheets will be wrestling at the Last Chance Open at Iowa State on Sunday.
The Cowboys are wrestling at Missouri today and Sheets will continue on to Ames to help secure his qualification for the NCAA wrestling tournament.
The coaches panel and RPI rankings came out this week. These help determine what conference get automatic bids to the NCAA tournament at each weight.
Sheets is solidly in the coaches panel ranking needed to receive an automatic bid for the conference at his weight class. He currently doesn’t have enough matches to be in the RPI rankings though. So wrestling here along with the Missouri and Iowa duals will make him eligible for the RPI rankings and should give an additional bid to the Big 12 conference at 157 pounds.
Depending on the number of allocations the conference receives at 157, Sheets will still need to wrestle to that spot to receive his automatic bid and lock in a spot in the NCAA tournament. If he doesn’t wrestle to that spot and receive the automatic bid OSU will have to rely on an at-large bid for him.
