100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 17 Dillon Stoner

Published

on

The next subject of our summer-long countdown may not be the first or second — or fifth — player you think of when someone mentions OSU’s dominant receiver corps. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a household name by October.

How he got to OSU

Dillon Stoner committed early in the 2016 recruiting cycle and held up his end despite offers from Washington State, Texas Tech and others and a strong late push from Arkansas. He played all over the field at Jenks High School, lining up as a wide receiver, a defensive back, a kick returner and even as a punter. He was a big part of Jenks’ four state titles during his career.

What he’s done in Stillwater

Stoner impressed coaches and teammates alike during preseason fall camp as a true freshman, showing of his athleticism and even outrunning James Washington in a couple of drills. He made a big enough impression to see playing time in the season opener.

His athleticism and football IQ were something the coaching staff recognized from Day 1. They even used him all over the field, just like his days at Jenks. He lined up at wide receiver and contributed on special teams. Stoner even took snaps in two of his four games.

Unfortunately, an early injury ended his season. But Stoner was apparently able to redshirt last season based on his designation as a redshirt freshman by OSU.

Role in 2017

Even with all the depth and talent the Cowboys have at wide receiver, Stoner is going to have role in this offense. The coaching staff has made it pretty apparent that they want to get him on the field.

Mike Gundy showed just how much trust he had in his true freshman in the second game of the season. With the Cowboys down 4 to Central Michigan in the fourth quarter — and on fourth down — he put the ball in Stoner’s hands. Even if just for a split second.

Here’s another look.

Who knows? Maybe Stoner is the wildcat QB of Mike Gundy’s dreams. Don’t be shocked to see him take more snaps this fall.

Noteworthy Stats and Highlights

Even with a shortened season, we got a little glimpse of what Stoner can provide as a receiver. Here’s a look from the Cowboys’ season opener against Southeastern Louisiana.
