100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 25 Madre Harper

At number 25 on our countdown, we look at an important part of Oklahoma State’s depth on defense who made an early splash in his very first game.

How he got to OSU

The three-star prospect from Lamar High School (Arlington, Texas) has a knack for being early. He ended up with offers from 17 schools including Oklahoma, Stanford, Pittsburgh and Kansas State, but was stuck with his early pledge to Oklahoma State. Harper graduated from high school early and was an early enrollee. That allowed him to take part in last year’s spring game — where he got an early first interception.

What he’s done in Stillwater

Harper didn’t stop there. In Oklahoma State’s season opener, Harper saw early playing time on special teams. When Southeastern Louisiana defensive back Javon Tillman muffed the first punt of the season, Harper took full advantage securing the loose ball in the end zone for the Cowboys’ first touchdown of 2016. Harper played in every game but Central Michigan getting most of his burn on special teams.

Role in 2017

During Oklahoma State’s golf media availability, Glenn Spencer mentioned Harper as one of three young cornerbacks he saw who could make an impact this fall along side Clemson transfer Adrian Baker.

“Between the A.J.s (Green), the Madres (Harper) and the Rodarius’ (Williams),” Spencer told PFB “there’s three young guys that have ability. But that doesn’t mean anything unless they perform and execute and play with the right temperament.”

Harper’s got the ability and he’s got the frame. Oklahoma State has been focusing on tall, rangy and athletic recruits for their secondary as of late. And at 6-1 and a half, Harper fit the bill. But during his time in Stillwater, he’s gone from a 167 pounds to 190 and looks ready to compete for more than just special team reps this fall.

Noteworthy stats and highlights

After his flashy start in the season opener — which we will show you below — Harper played in 12 games as a true freshman. He recorded three tackles against Colorado in the Alamo Bowl.
