100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 66 Lemaefe Galea’i

The next player in our countdown to the football season has been a solid contributor on special teams and looks to increase his role in the most anticipated Oklahoma State offense in years.

How he got to OSU

A three-star prospect from Trinity High School (Euless, Tex.), the 310-pound high school senior also held offers from Baylor, BYU and Utah State. Former Cowboy OL Joe Wickline convinced him to sign with the Cowboys but was gone before Galea’i would ever suit up. That makes him one of a handful of OSU lineman who have been introduced to four different coaches at that position during their careers.

What he’s done in Stillwater

After his redshirt year in 2014, Galea’i has spent the last two seasons mainly on special teams but has seen spot duty with the offense. Appeared in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and three last season.

Role in 2017

With the departure of starting right guard Michael Wilson, Galea’i has an opportunity to make a move up the depth chart behind another former starter in Larry Williams. As a second-teamer, starting reps are always one play away. Last season Williams started five games at the same position before an ankle injury allowed Michael Wilson to take over.

And if Mike Gundy’s post-Alamo Bowl comments still reflect his expectations for the line, Galea’i could be looking at plenty of reps anyway.

“I think we can have up to eight linemen next year that can play,” said Gundy. “I would love to play a first group, then after the fourth series put another group in and play. We may be able to do that. We’ll see.”

Noteworthy stats and highlights

Was a two-time all-district guard at Euless Trinity HS. His senior season he recorded 79 knockdown blocks and an overall grade of 91 percent, only allowing two sacks.
