Final Notes and Thoughts on Oklahoma State’s 49-42 Thriller Against Iowa State
I emptied the 10 thoughts chamber earlier today, but let’s take a run through my notes as I watched and covered the game. It got a little incomprehensible at the end given what was transpiring on the field.
• A note I wrote before the game: I have a bad feeling about this game going in. No idea how that’s going to play out, but that’s how I feel. Looking back: I was both right and wrong.
• Mike Patrick and Tommy Tuberville could not have looked like they wanted to be at this game any less than they did. I wrote that two minutes into the game. Little did I realize what a harbinger it would be.
• Time to change the stats, ESPN and FOX. Oklahoma State is not the 116th best defense against the pass nationally. We have to start doing per-drive or per-play statistics.
• I’m a big fan of the black-white-gray look for OSU but not with those helmets. That’s like putting a piece of poo poo on top of an Italian cream cake for decoration purposes.
• Why was Allen Lazard wearing a hoodie? Did we ever get an answer to that?
• Oklahoma State looked “NBA players whose teams have 60 losses in late April” levels of inspired in the first quarter.
• MOAR!

• I think Berry Tramel might vote for Joel Lanning over Baker Mayfield in the Heisman race! Never has a group of media members loved a neutral player more!
• Production quality of the game was not high. I don’t get real wrapped up in stuff like that, but I honestly think Carson could have organized our PFB team to a better-produced game than what ESPN put out there on Saturday. Bizarre, too, because ESPN is normally top-notch when it comes to production.
• Simulating the run with the pass. What a concept!

• I’ve always wondered what would happen if the football was like a millimeter short or long of the stick. Has a referee ever gotten down on his belly to look at it? I’m fascinated by the first down sticks.

• David Montgomery was the No. 55 player in the 2016 recruiting class … in Ohio.
• Iowa State had the eighth-best Big 12 offense coming in in terms of points per drive. OSU came within a miracle pick of letting ’em hang 50. Not good. Iowa State’s expected points per drive for 14 drives was 25 points.

• Iowa State would have the world’s largest concrete gnome. Zero surprises there.
• Loved J.D. on the goal line. Did not love Justice out of the wildcat at the goal line trying to tie it up. Did not love that at all.
• Iowa State does most little things well. Oklahoma State does not do most little things well.
• The long runs are great, but this is what makes him elite. The patience. The maturity. Superstar.
This is such a great, patient run by Justice. Stud. pic.twitter.com/0HutLUeNAr

• Seemed like OSU started pressing ISU defensively in the second half and, you know, remembering that Iowa State is Iowa State on offense.
• Oklahoma State only ran 68 plays on Saturday. It ran 88, 90 and 89 in the last three weeks. They were efficient on that side of the ball (7.7 yards per play) but the pace of the game is exactly what Iowa State wanted, I think.
• This might have been the play of the game.
• I loved OSU getting McCleskey in the mix in the second half. He and Stoner become so valuable when your deep guys are locked down and Justice is either tired or an opponent is selling out to stop him. Hit those 8-12 yard slants all day.
• Mrs. Pistols was appalled at Gundy’s hoodie choice. “Can we get him something that looks halfway decent?”
• Running backs with more yards against ISU than Justice this year: Zero.
| Player | Team | Yards | Per Carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Justice Hill | Oklahoma State | 134 | 5.4 |
| Akrum Wadley | Iowa | 118 | 4.2 |
| Justin Crawford | West Virginia | 102 | 4.1 |
| Darius Anderson | Texas Christian | 95 | 7.9 |
| Trey Sermon | Oklahoma | 90 | 5 |
| Tre King | Texas Tech | 82 | 4.1 |
| Kyle Hicks | Texas Christian | 80 | 6.7 |
| Kennedy McKoy | West Virginia | 60 | 5 |
| Baker Mayfield | Oklahoma | 57 | 5.2 |
| Taylor Martin | Kansas | 53 | 3.1 |
• OSU didn’t run it much, but I loved the delayed handoff thing to Justice. I also loved the first inside pitch to Justice. I did not love the second one.
• Oklahoma State had as many penalty yards as ISU had rushing yards.
• You to me in August: “Tylan will have three times as many targets as Washington in Ames.” Me to you in August:

• Gundy wears nicer clothes to his Monday press conference than he does to actual games.
• Imagine telling Oklahoma State fans in August: “Four different Iowa State players will take snaps against Oklahoma State, and one of them will not be Jacob Park.” Hell, imagine telling OSU fans that three weeks ago and seeing the reaction when you added … “and the game will come down to the final play.”
• Washington kept his games-with-a-catch streak alive at 42, and OSU (barely!) kept its games-with-a-turnover-forced streak alive at 24.
• Rudy!

• Justice Hill had 31 touches. The rest of Oklahoma State’s team had 29.
• ISU took deep shots and got flags. It doesn’t seem as hard as OSU wants to make it sometimes. Also, I don’t feel like I should, at any point in this game, have thought, “Iowa State’s offense and Oklahoma State’s offense look equivalent.” And yet that was a thought I had for most of the game.
• The Rudolph draw/sneak play was completely insane. Yurcich is drunk/brilliant/insane/all of the above.
• How many times in a row could OSU have gotten a hold on the goal line on a fade to Ateman? Over or under 99.5?
• Mike Patrick got more excited about ISU calling a TO late in the 4th quarter than any of OSU’s long TDs or anything Ateman did. What a bizarre broadcasting day.
• Why was Hill not in on 3rd and 8 to catch that screen that King caught? It would have been a first down.
• This was so impressive.

• I saw a lot of fire Yurcich, fire Spencer etc. today. Let’s be honest about the only thing that can unite us, fam, the only person who needs to be fired is Tommy Tuberville.
• The defense on fourth down on the final drive. ?
